JS Air Curtains has supplied and installed a 7.4m long stainless steel Rund air curtain system for a recent refurbishment at 151 Buckingham Palace Road, London. The bespoke system comprises two 2m long air curtains with a dummy section at each end.


The air curtain system was specified by building services consultants, The Anslow Partnership. The functioning central air curtains are creating a barrier of air to help prevent cold air from entering the reception area even with the doors in regular use.


151 Buckingham Palace Road is an early 1990’s landmark property and is situated adjacent to Victoria Station. It is mainly office space which is let to the Government and includes organisations such as the National Audit Office. A horizontal steel beam runs across the width of the reception area, onto which the cylindrical brushed stainless steel air curtain system is secured. Services are supplied at one end so all cabling is concealed.


The two operating Rund air curtains at 151 Buckingham Palace Road each incorporate 18kW electric heaters but hot water heating and air only models are also available. The Rund air curtain is offered in any single length from 1 to 3m with multiple units capable of accommodating any width of entrance. Fan powers vary from 1,875 to 6,475m³, making the air curtain ideal for sealing doorways up to 3.5m high.


The Rund has many mounting options. It can be held horizontally on brackets, suspended on rods, mounted on post-type arms either from the floor, ceiling or walls, or stood vertically on the floor. It is supplied with a control panel and 20m of plug and play RJ45 cable but can also be connected to a BMS.

The incidence and cost to the business of sick building syndrome could be reduced, and energy consumption significantly cut by utilisation of innovative technology developed by Passivent Ltd. Statistics show some 30% of employees working in air conditioned offices suffer from the illness, whose risk factors include poor levels of ventilation, poor air quality and low humidity: a situation that may increase with the stricter airtightness requirements of the latest Building Regulations.


Passivent’s Remote Air Dispersal (RAD) Airscoop unit naturally ventilates the building to ensure a flow of fresh air into the office environment. Unlike other systems, it has the flexibility in its design to enable repositioning of the ceiling- mounted diffusers should the office layout be altered, ensuring the staff still have good ventilation without the discomfort of draughts.


And the system has benefits beyond occupant health: as it principally functions via natural air movement, energy consumption can be almost halved against that for air conditioned buildings, capital costs are reduced by some 15%, the need


for air conditioning reduced or even eliminated, and associated maintenance costs also cut.


Suitable for use on the top floor of most large or deep-plan commercial buildings, Passivent’s RAD Airscoop comprises a roof mounted terminal divided into four separate chambers which are allocated to either draw fresh air into the building or exhaust the ‘used’ internal air. Flexible ducting, up to 10m long, is connected to diffusers inset in the suspended ceiling carries the fresh air into the workspace, creating displacement of the warm, ‘used’ internal air.


Because the system harnesses natural air movement (convection and the venturi effect), the only electricity consumed is that to adjust the ventilation flow louvres according to wind strength outside, and the air quality and airflow within. As it uses natural air movement, the system can function 24/7, 365 days a year, meaning the building operators get ‘free’ night cooling, as the system continues working at night, dispersing any excess heat and/or pollutant buildup generated during the day. www.passivent.com


Trainee teachers warm to Weatherite


Students and staff at Enfield teaching college in London will be feeling much warmer this winter thanks to a new heating system installed by Weatherite Building Services (WBS).


Appointed as Project Managers by Briar Associates of Stourbridge, West Midlands, Weatherite assumed full responsibility for the supply and installation of a Burderus gas condensing boiler, two Grundfos circulation pumps plus a new flue system from the boiler house to the roof and all associated building and electrical work. In addition to ensuring the indoor room temperature will be conducive to learning,


the fuel efficient condensing boiler will reduce the college’s energy bill and contribute to its environmental credentials. All work was carried out on time and within budget.
