Bbi completes contract with leading plastics supplier
Brecon-based facilities support specialist, Beacons Business Interiors (Bbi), has completed the refurbishment of an 8,500 sq metre facility for leading life sciences company, Sterilin. Bbi was appointed to work on the £3 million fit-out as part of Sterlin’s £12 million expansion plan, which involved moving its manufacturing plant from Aberbargoed to the Pen-y-Fan Industrial Estate in Oakdale, near Blackwood, in one of Wales’s largest commercial property deals of the year.
The project, which was one of Bbi’s biggest contract wins this year, involved the refurbishment of the former Fiamm Battery plant. Bbi handled all aspects of the project including design and office fit out, together with installing 1000 sq meters of clean room space.
Building the clean rooms involved the installation of a complex particle filtration removal system using HEPA filters, which was put in by Bbi’s dedicated mechanical and electrical division.
Steve Lesbirel, group managing director of Bbi, said: “Being a multi-disciplined facilities support specialist has enabled us to look after all aspects of Sterilin’s project from design and fit out to the specialist
requirements of designing and building a series of clean rooms. “The first job onsite was to replace the floor. Years of battery acid leaking onto the floors had played havoc with the concrete, so we had to grind the floor back and lay a high-performance coloured screed.
“The large scale fit-out involved up to 100 contractors on site at any one time, and required Bbi to implement its strict health and safety procedures throughout the project to ensure there were no incidents.”
For 50 years, the Sterilin brand name has been synonymous with single use plastics. Its range comprises over 800 products used extensively in microbiology and the life sciences. In addition to single use plastics Sterilin also manufactures plastic packaging, a range of cell culture and biotechnology products and is one of the UK’s leading experts in moulding and extrusion of silicone rubber.
David Frost, CEO of Sterilin, said: “The Parkway Buildings offered us the opportunity to create a modern, manageable space with room for expansion and Bbi proved to be the perfect partnership to deliver this. We chose them
for their proven track record in pharmaceuticals, particularly specialist clean room fit-outs, and have been thoroughly impressed with their work. “We were looking for a company that had experience of co-ordinating and designing projects on such a large scale. Bbi had the expertise, quality standards and rigorous health and safety procedures that made them such an attractive choice for our development.”
The Sterilin contract adds to Bbi’s growing portfolio of specialist clean room and pharmaceutical projects. It follows hot on the heels of Bbi’s recent refurbishment for pharmaceutical specialist, Bilcare, where Bbi provided design and fit-out services for the firm’s clinical trials site in Crickhowell, mid-Wales.
Lesbirel concluded: “The Sterilin and Bilcare projects clearly demonstrate the diverse nature of the work that we can handle at Bbi. We are rapidly developing an expertise in the fit out of high-tech clean room environments and hope to expand this side of the business even further.”
