First in British Standards water mist test


Ultra Fire Group has made history by being the first fire protection company to test its products under the new draft British Standard DD8458-1:2010 for water mist appliances. The new fast response low pressure LPR water mist nozzle from Ultramist, designed for domestic and residential applications including multiple private accommodation blocks, student accommodation blocks, private dwellings and care homes, was successfully subjected to a series of rigorous tests at the BRE (Building Research Establishment) in December.


Following the successful testing, Ultra conducted a live test and presentation day in February, also at the BRE, for fire safety professionals throughout industry. From a safe position behind vision panels, the invited audience of fire engineers, Health & Safety officers, architects, consultants and other specialists were able to see the action unfold in the test chamber. This realistically depicted fire suppression events in three typical room locations, with real-time temperature readings shown via monitor screens. Participants in the day-


long event were also able to view the company’s reputed UltraGuard portable low pressure water mist solution performing in tests.


The new British Standard testing initiative is a positive response in recognising the effectiveness of innovative water mist technology and gives end users the assurance of its excellent performance levels. Water mist systems must be installed by specially trained and approved engineers, so users are assured of the highest standards of installation expertise. The new Ultramist LPR Nozzle is a pendant configuration providing a coverage area per nozzle of up to 16 sq m. With a 5 bar water pressure, the Nozzle measures 55mm long (35mm protruding from finished ceiling) and 24mm in diameter and is made of brass (CW602N) with a thin nickel coating. Thermally actuated release temperatures are at 57, 68, 79, 93 and 141°C.
