2010 Review
2010 was a topsy-turvy year for the Saints. After their season-opening win at Stetson, all but four decisions were part of a streak of some sort. Siena, though, used a seven-game winning streak to its advantage, playing their way into contention for a spot in the MAAC Tournament and leading to the biggest series of the regular season at Manhattan.
Siena needed two victories in three games over the Jaspers to advance, and the teams split the first two games. Manhattan held off a late Siena rally to win the first 7-5, while the Saints bounced back behind a strong outing from Ryan Poplawski in the nightcap to win 6-3.
It all came down to game three of the series on May 21, and it looked like Siena had the game well in hand, but Manhattan made a furious rally to claim the final MAAC Tournament spot.
However, their climb to be in that position at all was remarkable, espe- cially given their 4-11 start to 2010

and their early troubles in confer- ence play. The 4-11 stretch came in Siena’s annual trip south and included games against top-notch opponents like Florida, UCF, and Georgia. However, the Saints did take two of four fromSouth Alabama, as well as their trip’s finale, a 10-9 triumph at Georgia.
After going 5-2 in seven non-confer- ence games in late March, the Saints opened MAAC play on April 2nd against Niagara. Conference play started ominously for Siena, as they dropped two of three against Niagara, Marist, and Canisius. The green and gold came alive against Iona, outscor- ing the Gaels 24-9 in a three-game sweep starting on April 23rd, but were dealt a major setback when swept at Rider on May 1st and 2nd.
At 19-25 overall and 6-9 in the MAAC, the Saints knew they had to right the ship quickly. It was then that Siena thundered into postseason contention, winning a non-conference tilt at Bryant on May 3rd before sweeping Saint Peter’s and Fairfield

in back-to-back three-game sets. In those six MAAC games, the Saints outscored the Peacocks and Stags by a combined score of 56-25 and in the process, gave the series at Manhattan considerable weight with regard to the postseason.
That loss in New York City last May has served as added motivation for manager Tony Rossi and company and the Saints return plenty of pieces to make another run at the MAAC title in 2011. Junior second baseman Dan Paolini returns after one of the finest offensive seasons of any player in the country and senior first baseman Kevin Quaranto will hit behind him in the order after batting .413 in 2010. Siena also returns the bulk of their pitching staff, including Poplawski, who went 6-1 last season and led the staff in appearances with 21
