nanotimes News in Brief

Images a) and b): The color 3D images show the inside of a mouse cell. The nuclear membrane is visible (to the right in violet, curved) and the various cell elements like the mitochondria (cel- lular power plants, burgundy beads), lysosomes (blue), endoplasmatic reticulum (green), and various vesicles (yellow). © HZB / Schneider, McNally

Image c) gives a 3D insight into the nucleus. Again, the nuclear membrane is visible (curved, violet) and several nucleoli in the nucleus (blue). Furthermore, you can see several tube-shaped membrane channels (dark violet) that extend into the nucleus. They play a role for viruses ente- ring cell nuclei (how that exactly happens is still not clear). The grey background in all three images shows the cutting planes through the cell. © HZB / Schneider, McNally

You can see all these details in cells in 3D with the new microscope.
