EUROPE’S RETAIL MEGASHOW OPENS SOON
EuroCIS, the retail technology focused show, will be held in conjunction with the wider parent event EuroShop, which takes place only every three years at the Messe Düsseldorf in Germany, from 26 February to 2 March 2011. EuroShop is the world’s biggest retail capital
goods trade fair and attracts over 100,000 visitors and nearly 2,000 exhibitors. This year EuroCIS, which covers information, communication and security technology, will be one of four show areas that also include EuroSales, EuroExpo and EuroConcept. Over 300 companies will be showing their
innovations and latest solutions at EuroCIS, exhibiting further developments in and around mobile devices – including machines for sales staff and self-scanning solutions, as well as smartphone applications. Visitors can see new point-of-sale (PoS) cash management solutions, the next generation of digital signage systems and web- based solutions at and around the PoS, the back offi ce and head offi ce, alongside e-commerce technologies. It will also offer a wide spectrum of innovative solutions, covering weighing systems, checkout hardware and software, merchandising management systems and workforce management, as well as reverse vending (returns) and retail security systems.
RETAIL’S ROAD TO RECOVERY
The recent National Retail Federation 100th Annual Convention, which took place from 9 to 12 January 2011 at the Javits Convention Centre in New York, was the fi rst of this year’s industry major tradeshows. It gave retail executives to check out the latest technology innovations from major vendors such as SAP, Microsoft, Oracle and Intel, as well as those targeting more specifi c retail needs. And its packed sessions gave delegates the chance to assess the state and future of the industry. Ian Cheshire, chief executive of B&Q owner
Kingfi sher, said 2010 was positive on the whole, with average sale and sell-through prices up. But, looking into the short term, he added: “Many countries have had defi cits to deal with, which is likely to bring downward pressure, particularly in the fi rst six months of this year, on the retailer.” Ira Kalish, Deloitte global consumer research director presented the longer-term view by painting a picture of major global consumer change driven by disproportionate demographic and economic shifts between demand in the West and emerging economies, like China, India and Africa. “This will challenge retailers to use technology in a way that can enable a direct relationship with each consumer, rather than relying on traditional mass marketing messages.”
