06 NEWS PCI SURVEY FINDS POSITIVE OUTLOOK

by InsightExpress of 500 information technology decision makers fi ve years on from the introduction of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). The majority (70%) of survey respondents felt that their organisation was more secure than it would if PCI compliance were not required and 87% believed the PCI requirements were necessary for protecting cardholder data. A further 67% of respondents anticipated that their spending on PCI compliance would increase this year, indicating positive executive and board buy-in for this important initiative, while 60% suggested that PCI compliance projects could drive other network or network security projects.

A large majority (85%) also

believed they would pass an assessment at the current time and 78% said they passed their previous initial assessment. And more than 85% of respondents were aware of the clarifi cations and recommendations associated with the newly announced PCI DSS 2.0 standards. Perhaps surprisingly, 60% were using point-to-point encryption to simplify their compliance efforts and possibly reduce the scope of their next PCI assessment. Fred Kost, Cisco director of group

security solutions, told Retail Technology the increased spending plans around PCI standards were in line with plans to build out businesses into new areas using e-commerce, wireless and virtualisation technologies in particular. “This is a refl ection of the continued technology security evolution of business growth,” he said. Kost added: “It is important to

make sure infrastructure networks that store and transmit data have the necessary protections around them. Some are looking to segment their protection so that virtual PCI data is included in the audit. But with

more data moving into the cloud, it is important to maintain control.” In other PCI-related news, the PCI Standards Security Council recently opened nominations to elect its Board of Advisors. The Board, which is elected by PCI members every two years, will represent the current roster of more than 600 PCI SSC participating organisations and will provide strategic and technical input to the council.

These include fi nancial institutions

(acquirers and issuers), payment processors, merchants (e.g. retailers, hospitality) and others (e.g. technology vendors, industry associations, service providers). Jeremy King, PCI Security Council regional director for Europe, told Retail Technology: “The outgoing Board had four members representing Europe, and we’re wanting to get more participating organisations in this region involved.”

Nominations close on 25 February,

followed by a voting period from mid-March to early April, and the new Board will be announced in early May 2011.
