he major tunnel contracts awarded by Crossrail will create huge employment opportunities.


The four contracts, worth £1.25bn, are the country’s most significant tunnel contracts since the Jubilee Line Extension and Channel Tunnel Rail Link and will be a significant jobs boost.


The contracts cover 18km of the 21km of twin-bore tunnels being built beneath central London, with initial works due to start later this year. The first tunnel-boring machine will then get to work in spring next year, from Royal Oak to Farringdon. Seven TBMs will ultimately be used and will undertake ten individual tunnel drives and construct the 6m diameter tunnels. Each TBM will be up to 120m in length and will come from European manufacturers, as no UK company can provide them, Crossrail said.


The contract for the Thames Tunnel between Plumstead and Woolwich, and other remaining contract for tunnel portals and station platform tunnels, will be awarded later this year.


Rail minister Theresa Villiers said: “Crossrail is a critical project for this country which has the potential to generate up to £50bn in wider economic benefits for UK GDP and allow the creation of tens of thousands of jobs. Coming fast on the heels of an announcement for around 600 new Crossrail carriages, this is a major milestone in a scheme that will transform journeys across the South East.”

At the peak of construction, from 2013-2015, around 14,000 people are expected to be employed on the project.

C305 – Eastern Running Tunnels (Limmo Peninsula to Farringdon; Limmo Peninsula to Victoria Dock; Stepney Green to Pudding Mill Lane) Joint venture comprising: Dragados S.A., John Sisk & Son (Holdings) Ltd.


To address a UK-wide tunnelling skills shortage, construction is underway on the Tunnelling and Underground Construction Academy in east London, providing training on the key skills required. At least 3,500 people will be trained in underground construction over the lifetime of the project once the Academy opens in the


summer. The next nearest centre offering appropriate training is in Switzerland.


Crossrail is also working with Jobcentre Plus to help local people get jobs on the project.
