Where to Book It Kirker Holidays
Somewhere new: Highlight that Slovenia and Slovakia are well geared up
for visitors but still offer the excitement of getting off the beaten track
Think Small: Slovenia is a small country, making it ideal for a week of
exploring and adventure
The Dubrovnik Card: The city's medieval charms means clients can easily combine a cultural city break with time on the beach
New Europe Trade Focus Croatia was named the ‘Up & Coming
Rising Star’ in the 2010 Travel Agents’ Choice Awards, and the tourist offi ce has expressed the importance with which it views members of the travel trade, promising ‘innovative new initiatives to assist them for 2011’. Look out for further details yet. The Slovenian Tourist Board will be
unveiling a new Travel Agents Manual for 2011, to complement a large summer trade event – the Slovenian Incoming Workshop – a showcase for potential overseas partners. There are also plans for an agents' fam.
New Europe Niche
Health tourists will be interested in the news that the Croatian town of Nin, near Zadar, has received funding to create what will be Europe’s largest
centre for ‘mud healing’. Cultural travellers are likely to be hearing more about Maribor in Slovenia, which has been designated European Capital of Culture for 2012. The town also has several vineyards in its vicinity. Skiers should pick up the Slovakia ‘Super SkiPas’ pass that allows all-in-one access to the country’s top fi ve resorts. It offers a full season’s skiing – for the price of a week in the Alps.
New Europe Families/Couples
For those tourists who like the idea of a seaside break without the cheaper boozy elements of some Med destinations, Croatia is an ideal choice, with many of its resorts providing restful settings for family holidays. Its trendier islands, in particular Hvar, are also fantastic for couples looking to treat themselves.
Slovenia and Slovakia both offer romantic escapes – Lake Bled in Slovenia is a fairytale-pretty destination with some excellent hotels and restaurants, while for those couples who enjoy the thrill of activity, Slovakia’s High Tatras mountain range offers the chance of spectacular outdoor adventure.
tourismtalk
Meri Matesic director, Croatian National Tourist Offi ce “We had 56,526 UK visitors in August 2010,
which is the highest number recorded since 1990. Increasing numbers of low-cost carrier routes have boosted numbers, plus with our Mediterranean climate, we fi nd Croatia is a popular choice for UK holidaymakers wanting some early summer sun, or even to extend summer into autumn. It’s also a good time for the foodie traveller, with olive and grape harvesting, wine-tasting and truffl e-hunting.”
Tine Murn head of information offi ce, Slovenian Tourist Board “The economic situation meant that in terms of
UK tourists, 2009 was down slightly on the year before. We had 69,428 arrivals last year but 2010 will be a bit better, particularly if we’re looking at overnights. The travel trade remains crucial to us, although we’re fi nding that direct online bookings are increasing every year."
