CANARY ISLANDS IN FOCUS

Bright Spot Winter’s

They may be part of Spain but the Canaries, a group of 10 islands located 100 km off the African coast in the Atlantic Ocean, has a certain exotic appeal among UK holidaymakers says Anna Maria Espsäter

t’s little wonder that the archipelago of islands known as The Canaries has a well-established reputation for winter sun holidays. Although all the islands are very different– Tenerife ( the largest), Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote – are very affordable and easily reached from the UK by low-cost carriers or charter fl ights.

I Like many of the stalwart sun-and-

beach favourites, the Canaries have diversifi ed greatly over the last decade or so.

Although the beaches and pleasant climate remain a major draw card for Brits every year – Fuerteventura, for example, has enjoyed an almost 25% increase on UK visitor numbers in 2010 – it’s now possible to have quite a different holiday experience from that of only a few years back.

Much is also being done to renew

the well-established tourist areas such as Gran Canaria’s Playa del Inglés. There are still ample possibilities for hedonistic beach living, complete with rowdy nightlife, fi sh and chips shops, cheap lager and live Premier League football, but away from the long- established resorts many islands have developed a distinctly different face . For example, several resorts on Gran Canaria have become a favourite destination for the gay and lesbian community, Tenerife has an annual carnival that few places can rival, Fuerteventura is being promoted as a family destination with safe beaches and good places for beginners to try their hand at water sports, while Lanzarote is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
