It is only when jade sits proudly around your neck, your wrist or your fi nger, totally standing on its own, can the true beauty of jade be seen.

CHOOSING JADE Only good natural jade that has never been treated with any chemical or heated in any way to enhance its colour will increase in value over time. Anything treated can still be purchased, but be clear they are NOT your investment pieces. T ese should be viewed as your fun pieces bought purely for adornment. In fact, such pieces should be treated as costume jewellery and as dress accessories; but these should NOT be confused with excellent natural pieces that may be small in size or modern in design. Remember that good natural jade is never cheap and the saddest thing is that not many people can tell the diff erence between a good natural stone with that of the fabulous fakes. So always get your investment pieces of jade from a reliable and reputable jeweler and supplier. T e best are jewellery houses that have a tradition of buying and selling jade. T is is how many of Malaysia’s wealthy jade crazy tais tais including our very own LILLIAN TOO got to know Winnie Sin and her husband from Jewellery Circles. T is delightful couple have been in the jade business for three generations, and they pride themselves on having the connections to source the best jade pieces from Burma and China, and usually also at good prices. Do note that there is a great price

diff erential between jade bangles. T ere are jade bangles and there are jade bangles. Price variation is something that amazes even the most hardened of collectors because a beautiful green jade bangle can go for as little as US$5000 or be sold for as much as a million dollars! T is is how much the price of jade can vary. On the lower end of course are the bangles with only a few spots of green and at the upper end are bangles that are in a uniformly deep and translucent beautiful apple green colour, and with wonderful luster and polish to boot. T is kind of jade bangle is rare and usually they can be seen (and

bought) only at special jade or jewellery auctions when families bring out their heirlooms and jewels for auction.

Jade bangles are the most

expensive of jade pieces, as bangles require a relatively large surface of green for the master craftsman to carve. Indeed, only the best grade of jade boulders - those without cracks or fl aws - is used. T is is the reason why bangles are the priciest of jade items. Cracks are a big negative when buying jade, so do be watchful there are no cracks. Inclusions found inside the jade are acceptable, although these as well as spots of any colour - black, white or yellow - naturally lowers the value of the jade bangle. Some people however feel that these spots indicate the jade has not been tampered with and as such are natural!

FOUR Cs in JADE T e four Cs that aff ect the value of jade are its colour, its clarity, its cut and its carat just like diamond. Of all the colours, green is the most popular and expensive, with the most

desirable being light apple green. In recent years, white and lavender jade have become popular, but in terms of value, they are worth less than green. In recent years, tricolour jade bangles in three brown or yellow, white or lavender and green nicknamed fuk luk sau have garnered a reputation for bringing good health, wealth and prosperity luck. It has always been green jade that has been most highly prized, although darker green colours that are almost black are not favoured. For clarity, we are looking for translucency. Jade that is translucent casts a magical spell on everyone who gazes into its depth! Such jade is extremely pricey! A well-cut jade bangle is one carved with good proportions and polished to a high shine. And of course, the larger the jade, the more expensive it is! T e advice of veterans is to get a jade bangle that fi ts comfortably, has a good feel when it touches your hand and which ‘speaks’ to you the moment you wear it. T e Chinese describe this as having “affi nity” with the jade. And in the matter of buying jade, especially a jade bangle to wear daily and continuously, there is no better way than looking for something that speaks to you.
