15. Andrew Macfarlane, chief financial officer, Aer Lingus


Aer Lingus has appointed Andrew Macfarlane as its chief financial officer and as an executive director with imme- diate effect. Macfarlane had served as Aer Lingus’ interim chief financial officer since December of 2009. Prior to join- ing the Irish airline, hewas chief financial officer of Rentokil Initial, Land Securities Group and Holiday Inn. His early career was with Ernst & Young, where he spent 12 years, reaching the position of corporate finance partner.


Jill Smyth has been appointed to the new role of head of MoneySense for Ulster Bank in Ireland. Smyth will be respon- sible for the development and delivery of MoneySense, Ulster Bank’s flagship financial edu- cation programme, across the island of Ireland. She has 20 years’ experience working for Ulster Bank, including over five years in a training and develop- ment capacity, and was previ- ously involved in delivering the MoneySense for Schools pro- gramme. As part of her new role, she will lead a team of over 300 MoneySense volun- teers who will go into local schools delivering impartial, practical and informative finan- cial education programmes designed to give young people greater confidence and knowl- edge on financial issues.


Keith McGuigan has been appointed finance director at specialist property asset man- agement company, Capital Assets. McGuigan will have overall responsibility for the financial operations of the busi- ness andwill also play a key role in preparing and overseeing all financial aspects of the asset and debtmanagement plans for clients. He is a chartered accountant with over 10 years’ international experience in a variety of sectors, including property management, con- struction, hospitality, manufac- turing, energy production, healthcare and childcare. Before joining Capital Assets, McGuigan held management positions in Horwath Bastow Charleton, Limerick and in George Patterson Y & R, based in Sydney, Australia. He has a bachelor of business studies from University of Limerick and has been a qualified chartered accountant (ACA) since 2003. He serves on the committee for the Chartered Accountants Ireland Mid-West Society.


18. John Varley, managing director, Carlton Hotel Group


John Varley was recently


appointed managing director of the Carlton Hotel Group. Varley began his career in Renvyle, Co Galway and has been working in the hotel industry for over 25 years. He co-founded the Carlton Hotel Group in 2004 and has played a key role in develop- ing the brand and organisation from the outset. His focus as managing director is to enhance Carlton’s offering of hotel expe- riences and to develop the strategic plans and the growth of group over the next number of years.


19. Stephen Young chief executive officer, HSBC


HSBC has announced the appointment of Stephen Young as its new chief executive offi- cer for Ireland. Young replaces Simon Wainwright who is tak- ing up the role of chief execu- tive officer, HSBC Insurance in the UK. Young has spent over 14 years with HSBC, most recently working in the group management office developing the group’s business interests in the Asia-Pacific and Sub- Saharan Africa regions. Previously he was head of HSBC General Insurance in the UK and he has also spent some time working for the company in the US. He is a graduate of Durham University and Cambridge University.
