A year of progress at the IoD
While 2010 has been an exception- ally difficult year economically, it has also been a year in which we have seen great fortitude and strength from our business leaders. We would like to offer our sincere thanks to all members for your continued support and commitment to the IoD. Corporate governance has
remained high on the agenda this year, with positive progress made towards improving standards in both the private and public sector. The IoD is a firmadvocate of the need for better levels of governance and, ear- lier this year, in conjunction with the National Standards Authority of Ireland, we launched a new Code of Practice for Corporate Governance Assessment in Ireland. In addition, we took part in public
consultations on corporate gover- nance this year, from the revisions to what is now called the UK Corporate Governance Code to the introduction by the Central Bank of the Corporate Governance Code for Credit Institutions and Insurance Under- takings, in which a number of IoD recommendations were adopted. We look forward to working with the Financial Regulator on how to improve corporate governance in Ireland and we will offer a tailor- made training programme on the Code in the new year. In the first half of 2010 we carried
out extensive research with mem- bers with the help of Behaviour & Attitudes, and we also held a mem- bers’ Town Hall event in Dublin. This research has proved invaluable in enabling us to assess exactly what you want fromyourmembership. We have been working hard to meet

those expectations and have intro- duced a series of new initiatives with lots more planned for next year. This year has been a significant
one for the IoD in promoting the importance of director training and development. The Chartered Dir- ector programme has gone from strength to strength, with 150 direc- tors having undertaken it to date and two cohorts of 19 delegates embark- ing on the programme in spring 2011. We also introduced a new and highly successful training programme, which will continue next year. In keeping with a focus on direc-
tor development and education, we have produced a new publication for IoD members. The Directors’ Handbook will shortly be available to all members and is the definitive guide to being a director in Ireland. The events programme was
expanded this year, with the intro- duction of evening briefings and directors’ fora. We also held two events in Cork in the autumn and we look forward to hosting further Cork events in 2011. Our seasonal lunches were very enjoyable this year, with speakers such as Peter Sutherland addressing members. Thanks to all sponsors and attendees for your sup- port throughout the year. Business at the Boardroom Centre
continues to grow, with expert can- didates on the register and more and more companies engaging the Boardroom Centre to recruit non- executive directors. We are committed to supporting
our members in the year ahead and will continue to endeavour to meet your needs and expectations. We look forward to working with you in 2011.
