Hedgehog Hotel is fully booked!
Little Holly with her injured leg
Volunteer Janet Vinnicombe with a hedgehog at a local residential home
We’re back to that time of year when our hedgehog hotel is fully booked and the underweight mammals spill over into tubs, pens, bird room and any other space that can possibly be used. Our recent frosts at night have made everyone very aware that winter is on its way and small hedgehogs out looking for food now are not going to make it through the winter. They are always the favourite when we take animals to local residential homes.
We have been busy collecting all the falling leaves and drying them in our visitor centre so that we can give them their natural bedding once they are up to weight and we can then
allow them to hibernate, safe until next spring, when they can go back to where they have come from. Little Holly was a hedgehog that came in with a leg injury. Luckily she has recovered and gained weight so that we were able to return her to her own home for the winter. Hopefully she is snug in her hibernaculum somewhere safe away from the cold winter winds.
It’s amazing what these little chaps can eat so if you can donate any tinned cat food we would be really grateful - they must have a mousse machine inside as they always produce twice as much from the back end than what goes in the mouth!!
