The Big Winter Warmer!

Many of you will remember in past newsletters pieces about our annual dip in the sea at Lyme Regis bay.

This year’s event is on Monday 27th December and is our last sponsored event of 2010 - it’s the perfect way to blow away those festive cobwebs after that heavy Christmas dinner and pud! The fun begins at midday where participants congregate at the ‘Rock Point Inn’. We would like to get as many willing supporters as possible, so if you think you’re brave enough to don fancy dress (no wetsuits allowed… that’s cheating) and take a “dip” or even come out onto the beach to support and cheer us on, we would love to hear from you.

Registration and sponsorship forms can be downloaded from our website or you can email helen@secretworld.org or contact the fundraising team on 01278 783250. All proceeds from this exhilarating event will go directly towards the rescue and rehabilitation of injured and orphaned wildlife.

Pictured below are past ‘Big Winter Warmer’ participants who lived to tell the tale!

RELEASE SITE NEWS

The year is drawing to a close and the last few weeks have seen the remaining orphaned badgers, deer and foxes released back into the wild as part of our rehabilitation programme.

I am particularly fortunate that my work involves the last part of the rehabilitation process, when all the long hours of bottle feeding clearing up and mucking out have been done by the dedicated team of animal carers. I have the job of finding and surveying release sites for the animals that come into Secret World, liaising with landowners and where possible organising the release. One area that is the key to our work is the generosity of people who open up their land for wildlife. This may be a garden for hedgehogs, or a river embankment for otters through to larger parcels of land for badgers, deer and foxes. Everyone who offers us access to their land large or small is vital to our work and without you, we could not deal with over 4000 orphans and casualties each year.

The offers of support this year have been amazing and we have undertaken wildlife release throughout England and into Wales. The fact that we are prepared to travel and undertake wildlife release outside of Somerset may seem strange but Secret World Wildlife Rescue receives wildlife from all regions of England and Wales and by reciprocating the release of wildlife back into the region it was initially found helps to maintain local bio diversity and it is often part of good rehabilitation protocol. I would like to thank all individuals, groups and organisations that have enabled us to release wildlife in 2010 by utilising their land… THANK YOU! If you think that you may be able to offer assistance with a release site (anywhere in England and Wales!) then please contact:
