playstation heavy rain trailer film music AUDIO NETWORK

The filmic-style two-minute trailer for Quantic Dream’s PlayStation game Heavy Rain, released earlier this year, prominently features an orchestral track from the Audio Network library. The attention-grabbing music, called Mars, was composed by Terry Devine-King and Nick Ingman and recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. David Bass, manager, music UK at Platinum Rye Entertainment, sourced the music for the trailer: “When we approached the music for this commercial we began with a briefing from the creative team – this involves us trying to decipher what the creatives really want and translating that into musical terms,” he says.

“With this particular advert there was a very tight budget with a pretty big usage so we knew we were going to be limited with what we could put forward,” says Bass. “I spoke with various production houses, sending them a music brief we devised from the meetings we had with the creatives and client. We needed the best possible music at the best possible price.” The shortlist produced after this was whittled down through a process of elimination, explains Bass. “Once I’d listened through the various tracks, we selected a ‘filtered’ manageable amount we then got the creatives to review. They chose their favourite two or three, which then went to the client. The client made their final decision based on these.” The music selected wasn’t a bespoke tune written for the spot, it was a pre-existing track that already resided in the Audio Network library. Its use on the spot, though, has raised its profile to a new level and even given it a bit of a following on YouTube. The YouTube clip for the trailer has been viewed over 200,000 times and a noteable proportion of the 1,310 comments made on the on the trailer are from fans of the music. “Neither we, the client or Audio Network had any idea that the Marstrack we eventually used would become so popular, gaining a following of its own on YouTube,” says Bass.
