favourite 10 ads of the year. Rattling Stick spent another year at the top of the Commercials 30 peer poll too (where fellow production companies name the rival outfits they admire most) with its rival producers picking out its “top quality work” and “great directors” and calling it an “uncontested heavyweight.” A major highlight for the company was being named the BTAA production company of the year for the third year in a row and, although Rattling Stick says it was a “tough year for budgets and creativity,” its directors still managed to create some of the most spectacular stand out spots of the year.

2010 is the second year at the top of the TelevisualCommercials 30 for Rattling Stick, the production company that was formed by directors Danny Kleinman and Ringan Ledwidge as recently as 2006. Last year, the company shared first position with

Gorgeous but this year it edges ahead to take the glory all for itself. This year Rattling Stick not only topped our most awarded list but had three of its directors in our peer-voted top 10 with Ringan Ledwidge voted best director for the second year in a row (Rattling Stick’s Danny Kleinman took the top spot for the three years before that too). The company also scored three of its ads in the sector’s

Danny Kleinman combined his strengths in comedy and vfx on the Weetabix Grand Nationalcommercial for WCRS and made one of the most visually arresting ads of the year with his falling polar bears spot for the Plane Stupid climate change charity. He also got to make more John Smiths ads with Peter Kay in the lead. Fellow Rattling Stick founder Ringan Ledwidge busied himself with the anti drug driving Eyes(pictured) made for the Department of Transport as well as Backlotfor Virgin Media. Andy McLeod scored a big hit too with the brilliant Harvey commercial for Thinkbox .

Blink has jumped from fifth place in last year’s Commercials 30 right into

second place. It’s had a strong year on the back of acclaimed spots like Dougal Wilson’s Never Knowingly Undersold for John Lewis. But it’s also been building its business out into new non- advertising work, such as installations, books, fashion films and music – like Kyle Bean and Lenart & Sanders window displays for Selfridges and Carl Burgess’ promo for Ratatat. The past year, says md James Studholme, “hasn’t been as bad as expected.” The key challenge is “how to make money out of the new non-advertising stuff.” Blink has 41 directors on its roster, making it one of the UK’s biggest outfits, and made 117 new ads last year.
