Emily Erwin & Rick Wampler Continued from page 38 with story written by Brooks Willich

It’s not uncommon for siblings close in age to share friends. Every now and then, friends who feel like family, actually become family. Such is the case here. Rick and best man Richard Erwin became great friends at UVA their first year. Little sister, Emily arrived on the scene a year later, and in her second year she and Rick began their courtship. After graduation Rick moved to Los Angeles and then Dublin, Ireland, while Emily relocated to Boston (a place she still holds dear).

Separation made the hearts grow fonder and they knew they had to be in the same place. Divergent talents -- he a math and commerce major, and she a religious studies and sociology major -- attracted the same enterprising employer. Appropriately, Rick is a program analyst at the hedge fund QIM and Emily is the director of Rick’s boss’ non-profit, The PB&J Fund.

The seed to hold their wedding reception at Jefferson Theater was planted after QIM held their holiday party there last December, shortly after the theater’s renovation was complete. According to Emily, “Choosing the Jefferson was the easiest decision of the wedding, besides each other of course. It’s a location with character, history and beauty at each and every turn. The theater is amazing as is, and needs very little ‘work’, because all you want to do is complement the architecture and history of the space. Additionally, she created a “Playbill” that featured the schedule, headshots of the bridal party and other key elements of the day.

To play on the film theme, He Said, “ It’s not surprising that everyone thinks Emily is one of the sweetest people they’ve ever met. It is surprising that they think it within five minutes of meeting her.” She Said, “Rick is the most loyal and quietly generous person I’ve ever known.” Such mutual respect and shared sentiment offers an enviable and auspicious beginning to a long and happy life together.

Their love for each other is supported and celebrated by their tight-knit and adoring families. Of the 330 guests, 160 were family. Music has played a central role in Em’s relationship with her father, “a super hip guy”, and husband. When it came to their first dances, Emily removed herself from the equation and asked the men in her life to choose the songs. Instead of a private dance, Rick jumped on stage, grabbed Emily and along with her brother and sister who had just given their speeches, sang The Band’s, The Weight to the captive crowd.

“Then over the sound system, came my dad, my lovely dad who is my favorite person ever…besides Rick. He had written and pre-
