The Honorable Betty Southard Murphy, apartner at the law firm of Baker and Hostetler,LLP in Washington, DC since 1980, died of pneumonia on October 16, 2010 at George Washington University Hospital. She was aresident of Alexandria, VA. Born in New Jersey,she grew up in Atlantic City.She graduated from the Washington College of Law at The American University in 1958. She had adistinguished career as aLabor Lawyer and received atotal of seven Presidential appointments.Mrs. Murphy was named as one of 20 “Legends of the Bar” by Washingtonian magazine in 2008.

Dr.Rovelstad migrated to the United States in 1951 and was naturalized in 1953. Although she earned aPh. D. from the Universität Tübingen in Germany in 1953, she wanted American educational credentials,aswell. She was awarded Master of Science of Library Science from The Catholic University of Amer- ica in 1960. She joined the faculty of the Department of Library Science at the Catholic University of America in 1960 and devoted her career to training new librarians until she retired in 1990. She is remembered by her many students and colleagues for her intellect, quick wit, and great love of life.


Dr.Rovelstad lived in the Washington area for 50 years,but had moved to Seattle to be near her daughter in September of 2006.

Leonard Small died on October 17, 2010 at Kensington Park. Born on March 3,1925, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the youngest of five sons.Heattended Brooklyn Technical College where he developed acuriosity about philosophy and history,and built on his basketball abilities.During the second world war,Len circled the globe in the U.S. Navy, acquiring alifelong love of travel, and played basketball for Navy.After the war,Red Auer- bach recruited him to George Washington University on abasketball scholarship.He majored in psychology and played basketball for his University.Len started his working life

as acollege professor at universities in New York and Massachusetts,and ended it as aschool psychologist for the Montgomery County School System. On retiring at age 62, he enthusiastically embarked on traveling to exotic countries,collected and sold Art Deco bronzes and jewelry as ahobby,immersed himself in family life,and threw himself into creating collages and framing Art Deco and Nouveau prints,which he donated to anum- ber of local charities.Everywhere he went was an adventure to him and he loved to ask people their life stories.His friends and family knew him as aman of boundless joie de vivre,integrity,and irrepressible enthusiasm. He loved life.


He was awonderful, compassionate father to his four surviving children from his first wife,Linda Hassan, LauraHall, Luise Levi, and Allen Small and to his precious daughter, Lauretta Otts,who predeceased him in 2005. Len’sbeloved wife,Elisabeth, predeceased him in 2008. He will always be remembered by them, their spouses and his seven grand- children with the most deep love and affec- tion.


Our love and thanks go out to all at Kens- ington Park and Montgomery Hospice who helped him live life to the fullest until the very end.

Died Friday,October 22, 2010 in Falls Church, VA,after along battle with Alzheimer’s.


The daughter of the late Carroll Robert (Ike) and Lila Ester (Mayhew) Craig, she was born March 26, 1926 in Bedford, VA and graduated from Bedford High School in 1944. She married Michael Bernard Lynch and moved to Arlington,VA in 1945, where she raised her six children while working as ademolition firm office manager.


In 1967, she joined with two partners to found ABC Distributors,Inc.inArlington, VA, abuilding supply store offering salvaged and new building materials.In1989, Alma pur- chased her partners shares and became the sole owner ofABC up until her death.


Never forgetting her roots,Alma frequently returned to Bedford with her children, who spent many summers there with their grand- parents.Alma was the proprietor of the Long- wood Inn and enjoyed the holidays there for many years,before selling it in 2002. She also kept aresidence at Smith Mountain Lake and owned several other properties throughout the Bedford area, as well as Northern Virginia.


During her life,Alma learned to ride horses, fly airplanes,and enjoyed collecting antique automobiles.


She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers,Alton (Ollie) and Sidney (Bob) Craig, her first husband, Michael Bernard Lynch and her youngest son, Robert Crawford Rowe.


She is survived by her four daughters,Kather- ine Lynch Mitchell of Bedford, Marina Lynch O'Neil of Manakin Sabot, VA,Michelle Lynch Bouma of Alexandria, VA,and Susan Lynch Falkenstern of Falls Church, VA,and one son, Bernard Craig Lynch of Friendship,MD. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Robert Mitchell, Jr., Melissa and Maggie O'Neil, and Julia and Daniel Falkenstern.

On July 19, 2010; along time McLean, VA resident Carl died at his home in Texas where he and generations before originated. Carl and his wife Mary Jane were known to many as friends and patriots.Carl graduated from West Point and devoted most of his career to the Space Program, notably the Apollo 11 moon landing, and various national defense programs.After Mary Jane's death, in 2000, Carl remarried and moved back to Texas with his second wife Chloe.Heissurvived by his sister Elinor and his sons Daniel, Fred, and Trigg, as well as his nephews,nieces, and grandchildren.
