SUNDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2010 OBITUARIES
Ruth Levine ARTIST
Ruth Levine, 74, an artist and
arts administratorwhowas cred- ited with helping advise Andy Warhol on a controversial paint- ing series called “Ten Images of Jews of the 20th Century,” died Oct. 18 at a hospital in Pitts- burgh. She had stomach cancer. Mrs. Levine was an abstract
painter who spent more than 30 years in Bethesda before moving to Pittsburgh in 1998. Over the years, she directed a
visual arts school at Rockville’s Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, worked for the National Endowment of the Arts’ theater program and man- aged traveling exhibitions for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Muse- um. In 1993, she turned full time to painting. Shewasworking at the Jewish
Community Center when she received a call in 1980 from Ronald Feldman, a New York- based gallery owner who repre- sentedWarhol. As Mrs. Levine told the story,
Feldman asked her advice on subjects for a Warhol series fo- cusing on “great Jews” of the century. She said she thought the call
was a joke and wryly suggested theMarx Brothers comedy team. She said all her ideas were used by Warhol, including the Marx Brothers, composer George Ger- shwin, actress Sarah Bernhardt, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, philosopher Martin Buber, scientist Albert Einstein, psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, Israeli leader Golda Meir and authors Franz Kafka and Ger- trude Stein. Warhol’s silkscreen prints
were exhibited at the Jewish Community Center before mov- ing to the Jewish Museum in New York, where they were sub- ject to a withering review by art critic Hilton Kramer. It took years for Warhol’s
reputation to recover, said Thomas Sokolowski, director of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. But over the decades, as the prints made their way to galleries worldwide, the critical assessment improved. Mrs. Levine moved to Pitts-
burgh when her husband, a for- mer National Institutes of Health official, became the Uni- versity of Pittsburgh’s senior vice chancellor for the health scienc- es and dean of itsmedical school. Mrs. Levine served on the board of Pittsburgh’s AndyWarholMu- seum, among other arts organi- zations. Ruth Eleanor Rubin was born
in the New York borough of Queens, and she grew up in New Haven, Conn.As a youngwoman, she attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She was a 1971 fine arts graduate of Ameri- can University, where she also received amaster’s degree in fine arts in 1975. In 1982, she helped curate
“The Jews in the Age of Rem- brandt,” a critically well-received showof engravings, etchings and mezzotints, at New York’s Jewish Museum. Survivors include her hus-
band of 51 years, Dr. Arthur S. Levine of Pittsburgh; three daughters, Amy Levine of Pitts- burgh, Raleigh Levine of St. Paul, Minn., and Jennifer Guerini of Stevenson Ranch, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
