HOUSE CALLS A basement makeover, from the ground down BEFORE AFTER 3

by Terri Sapienza THE CHALLENGE

Lauren Einhorn and Chris Lelieur think the basement in their Centreville townhouse is uninviting. They’d like to turn this 12-by-171

⁄2 -foot space into a comfortable

room they can use for relaxing with their dog, watching TV and entertaining friends.

THE SOLUTION By moving the TV off the floor, using smaller-scale furniture and adding color and texture for warmth, designer Liza Jones opens up this small space.

Paint the room a warm taupe (Believable Buff by Sherwin-Williams).

Remove the white mantel and all the white trim around the fireplace. Then, build a wood veneer box around the top half of the fireplace to house the TV and wires. Stain the box in a rich, chocolate brown color. Paint the brick a warm cream (Alabaster by Sherwin-Williams) and the gold fireplace screen black.

Remove the stairway railing and build up the wall to create a cozy corner.

Add sconces on each side of the fireplace.

Hang a new flat-screen TV above the fireplace to open up the floor space.

Replace mismatched sofas with a new sofa with chaise. Add a matching chair and a round leather ottoman. A dog crate next to the side chair can double as a side table.

A stool at the end of the chaise can be used as a side table, footrest or extra seat. Buy an area rug that pulls in the new colors in the room.
