If the landlord won’t do it, maybe you should give the lawn a new lease on life

I have lived in a rental home for four years, and my landlords refuse to be involved in any outdoor maintenance. The back and side yards are overrun with weeds. I have spent hundreds of dollars on landscapers, weed mats and weed killers. What can I do short of digging up the entire landscape and replacing it with new soil and mulch or landscape pebbles?

One solution is to invest in a lawn mower and spend some time on yard care. Even weeds that are mowed regularly look fairly tidy. You may discover you like gardening. If not, you’ll know that you should rent an apartment without a yard or
look for a rental that includes yard care next time. Electric lawn mowers with
batteries that you plug in to recharge are most convenient. You don’t need a gas can, and they start instantly. They cost about $400. Electric lawn mowers tethered to a cord cost less, about $200. Lower-priced gas models start between that range.
The shower drains in my 9-year-old house are getting choked with a whitish substance that builds up on the inside of the bottom portion of the drain and the top of the drain pipe. It is very hard, even blocking weep holes built into the drain assembly. I have to clean them out regularly, chipping away the substance with a flathead screwdriver. Is this soap residue or lime scale? I tested my water, and it had a hardness of 3 grains per gallon — not perfect, but certainly not horrible. Do I need a water softener?
