June was an accomplished amateur artist until her eye- sight failed and was amember of the Vienna Arts Society and the Miniature Soci- ety.She was an active member of the Epiphany United Methodist Church in Vien- na and had along-time interest in the Rose Park United Methodist Church inWolftown, VA.


Afuneral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday at Epiphany Church in Vienna. Burial will follow at 3p.m. at Rose Park Church. In lieu of flowers,the family suggests a memorial donation to either church.

Louise Todd, fifth generation Washington- ian, died of natural causes,onOctober 16, 2010 in McLean, Virginia. Her husband, Ed Todd, of Easton Maryland, died May 28, 1990. She and her ancestors span 240 years in Washington from 1770 to 2010. Her childhood home was in the shadow of the Capitol and across the street from the Smithsonian. She and her five brothers and sisters roller skated in the Capitol Rotunda as schoolchildren. Their father Walter Rynex decorated the interiors of government buildings in the growing Capi- tal.


Her descendants include her son Jim Todd and his wife Sharon of McLean, Virginia; grandson Chris Todd and wife Denise of Fairfax, Virginia; granddaughter Kimberley Todd of McLean,Virginia; former daughter- in-law Sheila Todd of Reston, Virginia; Great-grandchildren Catherine and Daniel Todd of Fairfax; and Great-grandchildren Samantha, Casey,and Dillon Prestidge of McLean.


Aservice honoring her life will be held on Saturday,October 23, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1205 Dolley Madison Blvd, McLean, Va.at1:30 pm. Helen Gwendolyn Childers Westover Orth, 89, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away on Monday,October 18, 2010 in Woodbridge, Virginia.


Raised on adairy farm in Temple,Texas, Gwen was the daughter of Preston and Lucile Scott Childers.She descended from afamily of pioneer Texas settlers and ranchers who worked the original Chisholm Trail, and was the granddaughter of Dr.Arthur Scott, co- founder of Scott &White Hospital. Following her graduation from college,she worked as asecretary at Fort Hood during World War II and moved to Albany,New York with her husband, General Wendell Westover,whom she married in 1945. After his death in 1960, she moved to Virginia with their two children and worked for several organizations,retiring from BF Goodrich in 1986.


Gwen was the first woman in Bell County, Texas,toreceive her pilot’slicense,having learned to fly abiplane in her father’scow .

Always sensitive to a good story line and aesthetic qualities of color and music,she contributed brilliantly during many phases of her life; in the 1930s writing a column for the Takoma Sunday Ledger while she toured Europe on abicycle; in the 1940s designing theater sets in Georgia and the

She married Gilbert (Bob) Roberts in 1946; they had two children, Reid and Marcia. In 1965, she married EdwardDugan; they had one child, Darryl, and Ed brought his daughter,Sheran, into the family from aprevious marriage.

Lost her battle with cancer on October 14, 2010. She is survived by her daughter,Marcia R. Ward (Rick) of Wingdale, NY;her sons, A. Reid Roberts (Karen) of Mt. Airy,MD, and Darryl K. Dugan (Charlotte) of Alexandria, VA;her grandchildren, Theresa Prince (Tony) of Goldsboro, NC, Denise Kearney (Ken) of Pikeville, NC, Kristen Arneson (Michael) of Union Bridge, MD, Brent Roberts (Cara) of Hanover,PA, Amanda and Rick Ward of Wingdale, NY,Casey and Cole Dugan of Alexandria, VA;and eight great-grandchildren.


She was predeceased by her father,Oliver Mellum, her mother,Ethel Day Mellum, her husbands,


Early in her career,she worked for the Woodward &Lothrop Co. managing the recorddepartment. In 1963, she began working for the Applied Physics Laboratory/Johns Hopkins University in the Security Group and retired in 1997.


She was an avid duckpin bowler for over four decades at the Glenmont, White Oak, and Wheaton Triangle lanes. She became known as the “Towel Lady” selling crocheted hand towels at craft shows. She also enjoyed playing Bridge and Shanghai with family and friends (her Lunch Bunch), reading and working crosswordpuzzles.


Funeral services will be held onWednesday,Novem- ber 17, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery,Arlington, Virginia.
