What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction? “Local elected officials and civic lead- ers must begin to think outside the statehood box about the political sta- tus of the District of Columbia. In D.C., we are third-class citizens be- hind the territories. Let us seek terri- torial status, where we will keep our federal income taxes, prosecute all local crimes and have greater budget and legislative autonomy. As a terri- tory, D.C. would have a governor and a legislative assembly, more appro- priately reflecting the reality of our current exercise of governing author- ity. An elected delegate to the U. S. Senate, a proposal that has passed the House twice, should be sought.”

Why should voters elect you? “I will work full time for a vote in the House, a seat in the Senate and a ter- ritorial form of government for the District.”

Eleanor Holmes Norton* Age: 73

Residence: Capitol Hill.

Education: JD, Yale Law School; MA, Yale Graduate School; BA, Antioch College.

Occupation: Delegate, U.S. House of Representatives.

Elected offices/civic activities: Delegate, U.S. House of Representatives.

What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction? “Structural changes from the recession in the D.C. economy will make it difficult for a city without state backup to sustain the growth the District experienced for a decade. The city is unable to fully participate in the current regional economic recovery because of the gap between D.C. education levels and the jobs in the upscale regional economy. My work in consistently getting the District treated as a state in legislation and as chair of a major economic development subcommittee are increasingly essential, but more work, such as my D.C. Tag bill, which has doubled D.C. college attendance, is necessary.”

Why should voters elect you? “Producing for D.C. without a vote; chairing jobs-generating subcommittee; largest U.S. project at St. Elizabeths; more stimulus funding than seven states; all appropriations attachments eliminated.”

Missy Reilly Smith K Age: 67

Residence: Cathedral Heights.

Education: Strayer’s Business School; FTD Design; real estate degree.

Occupation: Real estate sales- woman; president, WAKEUP.

Elected offices/civic activities: Executive director, Defend Life; state leader, Operation Outcry; board of directors, St. Ann’s Help- ers for Life, Insurrecta Nex, team leader, Silence No More; board member, lifeguard, coordinator, Gabriel Project and Project Ra- chael; weekly radio talk show host, NPLR; founder, Chastity Pro- grams International; sidewalk counselor.

What is the most urgent prob- lem facing your jurisdiction? “The most urgent problem facing D.C. is the family. I believe the family is the nucleus of society and the government should adopt policies that protect children and the family in all stages of life. I am pro-life; I believe in traditional marriage; I support a voucher pro- gram so that parents can choose which school their children at- tend; I support economic policies that adhere to a free market and give small businesses the atmos- phere in which they can start, grow, and prosper -- free of suffo- cating regulations and crushing taxes.”

Why should voters elect you? “I will return this government of the people, by the people, for the people to be under God. Other- wise, we shall perish.”
