L OCAL LIVING

Council Ward 1

DEMOCRAT REPUBLICAN

Council Ward 3

DEMOCRAT

Jeff Smith Age: 36

Occupation: Executive director, Dis- trict Community Voices Organized and Informed for Change in Educa- tion.

Elected offices/civic activities: Member, D.C. Board of Education, 2005-07; board member, Options Public Charter School.

What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction? “We are experiencing an education crisis in our city, and I believe we need a council that will not sit on the sidelines and require the chancellor to fix our schools by herself; rather, we need hands-on leadership with ex- perience and commitment to educa- tion reform. As the Ward 1 council member, I will fight for quality and continuous teacher training and staff development, comprehensive facili- ties planning for public and charter schools, and increased partnerships to bring support and activities need- ed to promote schools as a central role in the life of the community.”

Why should voters elect you? “I will restore integrity and ensure community-engaged leadership for 2011 because Ward 1 deserves bet- ter schools, safer neighborhoods and more responsible development.”

Bryan Weaver Age: 40

Community Association; coach, Hyde Public Charter School/basketball; coach, Jelleff Boys & Girl’s Club basketball; adviser, Urban Rangers summer program.

What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction? “Although Ward 1 has seen many great improvements in recent years, on our current path, we run the great risk of becoming a ward divided; a ward of the ’haves’ and the ’have-nots’ with little to no middle class. We need to create true career-path opportunities for our residents, especially our young people; we need better access to quality public education; we need to foster our small businesses; and we need to create workforce housing so those working in Ward 1 (teachers, police officers, nurses and members of the service industry) can live in Ward 1.”

Why should voters elect you? “If you believe in a greener, more accountable, transparent government that will focus on smarter growth and smart progress then vote Weaver Ward 1.”

What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction? “Go to Columbia Heights, U Street and all of Ward 1. Our accomplishments are there for all to see! We have transformed our neighborhoods without sacrificing the fabric of community. Through affordable housing, police presence and response, gang prevention, better city services, substance-abuse treatment, new jobs through conscientious economic development, training and education, more of us will have the good life. The diversity we treasure is protected. Every right-thinking person wants safe streets, good government and high-quality schools. Count on me to continue to improve the ward in all of those areas. Ward 1 is the city’s most diverse ward!”

Why should voters elect you? “Because I have a proven track record of achievement: more jobs through more economic development, welcome newcomers, fight crime, protect tenants/affordable housing, improve D.C. services.”

Mary Cheh* K Age: 60

What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction? “We must vigorously continue our school reform efforts and encourage the chancellor to stay in office to complete the transformation she has begun. Moreover, starting with early child learning and moving through K-12, including vocational education and postsecondary opportunities, we must ensure that we have an educa- tional system that enables everyone to lead quality, productive lives. Over- all, the council must exercise strict stewardship of District funds and re- spond to the economic downturn by trimming budgets and improving the efficiency and delivery of services.”

Why should voters elect you? “I have a record of progressive legis- lation, excellent constituent services, unwavering commitment to school re- form and the energy and ability to get things done.”
