He graduated from Holy CrossAcademy, Lynchburg,VA in 1954 and from Benedictine High School, Richmond, VA in 1958. Richard,“Smitty” or “Bev” as friends fondly called him chose a career in public service. He began his career as a firefighter in Williamsburg, VA then moved to the City of Alexandria, Virginia where he gave 25 years of service. He is also retired from Giant Food where he worked for 26 years. After retiring he moved to Denver, NC to be near his grandchildren. Richard was an avid Lionel train collector, gardener, cook and poet. Richard is survived by his loving and devot- ed children, Tracie Hoagland and husband David of Davidson, NC, Kristin Smith of Bellevue,WA and Michael and wife, Diane of Huntersville, NC. He will be missed dearly by his six grandchildren, Owen, Lindsay, Jessica, Natalie, Braeden and Bryce. Patricia Ann Middlemas-Michael, 79, wife of the late Dr. Thomas D. Michael, daughter of the late Robert Steele Middlemas and Helena Theresa Shea-Middlemas, and the adopted daughter of the late Rosalie Virginia Weinberg-Middlemas, died on Sunday, Sep- tember 5, 2010 at her home, Broad Run Farm, near Woodsboro, MD. The cause was congestive heart failure.
Mrs. Michael was born in Santiago, Chile on July 30, 1931. During her childhood, she traveled with her parents in Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina and Cuba while her father was an advisor to various American corpo- rations and the U.S. Department of State. In 1945, she moved with her parents to Washington, D.C., and she later graduated from National Cathedral School. Mrs. Michael received her B.A. in International Relations from American University. Following her ten- year career with National Geographic Maga- zine’s Editorial Research, she pursued grad- uate studies in Spanish Literature at Uni- versity of the Americas, Mexico City. Mrs. Michael briefly taught Spanish at Frederick High School before marrying Dr. Michael in 1965. Throughout their 40-year marriage, Dr. and Mrs. Michael traveled extensively and pursued their mutual interests in literature, art, music, archaeology, gardening, raising cattle and farming their beautiful Maryland property.
Mrs. Michael is survived by her son R. Steele Michael of Frederick, by her stepchildren Christopher Michael of Greeley, CO, Stacey Michael Di-Franza of Cherry Valley, NY, Tara Michael Andrews of Miles City, MT, Garth Michael of Baltimore and her grandchildren Tessa Andrews, Tara Michael, Kalin Andrews, Kerry Michael, Jacob Michael, Rosalie Michael and Layla Shellhammer.

Barbara served proudly in the U. S. Marine Corps graduating from training with top honors. She was attached to the NATO staff of Adm. Robert P. Briscoe,Commander in Chief, Allied Forces Southern Europe in Italy. After an interval of separation from service, Barbara then joined the US Army as an Administrative Specialist. During her time in the service, she earned her undergraduate degree through the Univer- sity of Maryland, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. Upon returning to the United States, she worked for the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon and later as an Intelligence Analyst for the Defense Intelligence Agency.
Barbara is survived by her beloved sister, Vilma M.Vaccaro ofWarwick, RI, and by her loving cousins.
