L OCAL LIVING
HOUSE CALLS From porch to sunroom, the inside story BEFORE AFTER
by Terri Sapienza
THE CHALLENGE Lisa Bernstein of Rockville recently converted her 16-by-14-foot screened-in porch into a climate-controlled sunroom. She wants a warm and relaxing space that reflects the outdoors but
doesn’t look like her former porch. Translation: no wicker.
THE SOLUTION By bringing in a mix of fabrics and colors that are reminiscent of the outdoors, designer Ann Kenkel gives Bernstein a warm and tropical retreat right inside her home.
Use paint colors that reflect the outdoors: a light green on the walls (Mesquite) and a sky blue on the ceiling (Blue Haze), both by Benjamin Moore.
Replace wicker furniture with upholstered pieces to make the room feel more like an indoor space. The new pieces coordinate with the furniture in the adjacent family room.
Add an indoor-outdoor rug to delineate the main seating area and add warmth and coziness underfoot. The color of the rug should be similar to the green on the walls.
Install curtain panels in the corners of the room and on the sides of the door to provide warmth and comfort without eliminating any of the view.
Add table lamps for soft ambient lighting at night.
Bring in color and the outdoors with flowering plants hung from the ceiling.
