THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2010 COLLEGE FOOTBALL HOKIESNOTEBOOK No time to dwell on Boise State loss

Virginia Tech players prepare to take on JMU on Saturday

BY MARK GIANNOTTO

blacksburg, va. — Following his team’s season-opening loss to No. 3 Boise State on Monday night, Virginia Tech senior Davon Morgan couldn’t sleep. After arriving back on campus at 4 a.m. thanks to the Hokies’ charter flight from BWI airport to Roanoke, the safety was still “in game mode,” his mind racing with images of the little mistakes that could have turned a devas- tating defeat into a resounding victory. He watched “SportsCenter” to

pass the time, including several replays of the game-winning touchdown pass by Broncos quarterbackKellenMoore, final- ly closing his eyes around 7 in the morning. But even though the Hokies were excused from all classes before noon on Tuesday because of their late arrival,Mor- gan made sure he was at his one morning class, even if it meant surviving on four hours of sleep. “I wanted to let the campus

know, and everybody else know, that just because we took a loss that we’re not gonna be down about it,”Morgan said. “We gotta keep pushing forward.” But with Virginia Tech sched-

uled to face James Madison on Saturday afternoon, that Mon- day night defeat has brought on more challenges than just mov- ing on mentally. TheHokies will be forced to operateonfourdays’ rest this weekend, and because ofanoffdayTuesday, they’llhave to squeeze a week’s worth of preparation into three days. Coach Frank Beamer said that

practice sessions Wednesday and Friday would include two days’worth of instruction, buthe also wanted to try to lessen the overall workload on the team. “It’s a lot to cover in a short time,” he said. “When you play on a short week, your rest gets inter- fered with and you worry about how that affects . . . practice.” It’s particularly challenging considering the toll—both emo- tionallyandphysically –Monday night’s game took on Virginia Tech. The Hokies had to dig themselves out of a 17-point first- quarter deficit, only to watch their effort go to waste when the

In partnership with JOHN MCDONNELL/THE WASHINGTON POST Tyrod Taylor says theHokies knewthey’d have to come down from the opener and play again quickly.

Broncos scored that decisive touchdown. “Emotionally draining I think

is an understatement,” said ju- nior wide receiver Danny Coale (EpiscopalHigh). Senior quarterbackTyrodTay-

lor suffered an apparent leg inju- ry in the second half against the Broncos, but remained in the game. He confirmedWednesday that he would be fine for this weekend, and he might be the most prepared for such a quick about-face. During his prolific high school career, the Hamp- ton, Va., native was once forced to play three games in a week. “It’s a short turnaround but it

has to be done,” Taylor said. “We knewthat going into the season.”

Taylor: No Tebow speech Throughout preseason prac-

tices, Taylor was not afraid to vocalize his goal for theHokies: a

national championship. On the heels of Monday night’s loss, Taylor was asked if he would emulate the 2008 speech given by former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow — which is now immortalized on a plaque in Gainesville — after the Gators lost an early-season contest to Mississippi. Florida went on to win the BCS championship that year. “I’ll save those speeches for

the locker room,” said Taylor, a team captain. “We just have to go out there, and the rest of the games show people that we can play and thatwe’re worthy of our national ranking.” Taylor said he’s been talking

with teammates individually, re- gardless of their position or age, emphasizing they shouldn’t get used to this losing feeling. “For the most part, if they’re on cam- pus, I’ve talked to them,” he said.

Injury update Starting defensive end Chris

Drager suffered a knee injury in the first half Monday, and though he did return to the game, his availability for this weekend is in question. Cornerback Jayron Hosley

struggled with cramping prob- lems Monday but should be available against James Madi- son. Left tackle Nick Becton, the presumedstarter formuchof the spring, is still dealing with a turf toe injury and did not play against Boise State. His status will be evaluated in practice this week.

Linebacker Barquell Rivers,

who has struggled while coming back from a torn quad, is still having trouble running at full speed, and there is no timetable on his return to the lineup. giannottom@washpost.com

two of his main blockers in the opener Sunday night atWashing- ton. Dallas Cowboys right tackle

MarcColomboandleft guardKyle Kosier missed practice again Wednesday because of knee inju- ries suffered during training camp, leaving little time for them to prove they are healthy enough toplay thisweekend. Colombois thesurprise.Hewas

supposed to have been back a weekagobasedontheinitial time- table when he underwent ar- throscopic surgery. “If he doesn’t practice this

week, I would say he probably wouldn’t play,” Coach Wade Phil- lips said. Kosier sprained a ligament and

is threeweeks into a recovery that was expected to take four to six weeks. Dallas has veteran backups for

both: Alex Barron at right tackle, Montrae Holland at left guard. Both started in place of the start- ersduring thepreseason. “I think the strengthof the guys

that are in there, Barron andHol- land, are comparable to what we have so you don’t have to change toomuch,”he said. lBILLS: Ever since he was

drafted ninth overall, running backC.J.Spillerhasbeenunafraid to discuss how much he wants to play a role in turning around a Buffalo franchise that’s been an afterthought formuch of the past decade. He’s getting a chance to start

proving it. Coach Chan Gailey named Spiller his starter this weekend, when the Bills open the season against Miami. Gailey basedhisdecisiononthedynamic spark Spiller showed through much of the preseason by leading the team in scoring with three touchdowns rushing. Gailey says Spiller would have

gotten the nod as starter even if Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch, who split the starting du- ties lastyear, hadnotmissedmuch of thepastmonthwithinjuries. lGIANTS: After missing most

EZ SU PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL NFLNOTEBOOK Dallas likely not to have

two offensive linemen With starters injured, Cowboys turn to Barron and Holland

ing lineup. Phillips, who underwent mi-

crofracture surgery on his left knee last September, workedwith the Giants’ first team in prepara- tion for the season opener against theCarolinaPanthers onSunday. “This has been a long, long,

long, long offseason forme,” Phil- lips said. “It’s like I had two be- cause of the surgery. Imissed it. I really did. They say you don’t know how much you missed it until it’s gone. Not to be out there wasaneyeopener. Iamgoingtogo out there and have fun, and not take it for granted.” . . . New York Giants running back

Brandon Jacobs stormed off from an interview session with report- ers after being questioned about his role. Jacobs has been demoted to the No. 2 back behind Ahmad Bradshaw. After answering some ques-

tions about the upcoming season, he was asked about the team’s two-backsystemin2008,whenhe and Derrick Ward shared carries andeachranfor 1,000 yards. Part of the question was did

bothbacks forget their egos? “You think I’m stupid, aren’t

you? You guys are funny, man,” Jacobs said before walking away, leaving the room with an exple- tive. lVIKINGS: Center John Sulli-

van is listed as probable for the season opener in New Orleans on Thursday night, even though he hasmissed virtually all of the pre- seasonwitha calf injury. lBEARS: Pro Bowl linebacker

Lance Briggs was in full pads for the first time since Aug. 28 and practiced on a limited basis for Chicago. lRAIDERS: Oakland has

signed former Giants defensive linemanJayAlford. The teamsays it released offensive lineman Erik Pears to make room for Alford. Alford, whomissed all of last sea- sonwith a knee injury, was cut by theGiants on Saturday because of NewYork’sdepthonthedefensive line. lDOLPHINS: Former Pro Bowl

kick returner Clifton Smith has signed with Miami. Smith, re- leased Sunday by Tampa Bay, joined the Dolphins for Wednes- day’s practice. He made the Pro Bowl with the Buccaneers as a rookie in2008, Smith led the NFL in kickoff

returns in2009withanaverage of 29.1 yards. But he was slowed by injuries last year and during the Bucs’ recent training camp.
