Motorists visiting car parks across the London Borough of Bromley will notice Park Mark signs in virtually all of the council’s car parks. ‘Public safety is
crucial to us and we have taken these measures to ensure that our car parks provide a secure and clean environment,’ said Gerry Broomfield, operations manager for parking services. ‘By looking at issues
such as lighting, natural surveillance and other areas we can design-out crime and criminality and make parking facilities safer. We have worked in partnership with the council to bring about a parking environment that is as safe and welcoming as it can be’, said Mick Lane, crime prevention design advisor for Bromley Borough police. 35 council-owned and maintained car parks in the borough have received the Park Mark. Measures taken vary
according to the type of car park under scrutiny. For example, the Civic Centre multi-storey in the town centre has had additional lighting and painting works to improve lighting levels. A new CCTV surveillance system has also been installed in this car park to detect abnormal behaviour. Te Lennard Road
car park in Beckenham received new fencing, which has reduced fly tipping. A help and information point has also been installed in this car park to assist with customer enquiries. Repairs and refurbishments are ongoing to ensure that the high standards required to achieve Park Mark are maintained.

KIRKALDY TOP OF THE
SCOTS Fife Council has committed £60,000 over three years towards gaining Safer Parking Scheme Park Mark Awards for its car parks. Kirkcaldy Town Centre has led the way by achieving the Park Mark Award for 15 town centre car parks.
Kirkcaldy is now the town with the most Park Mark Awards for central car parks in Scotland.

Top marks…Huntingdonshire District Council has received Park Mark for all its car parks
Huntingdonshire District Council has received the prestigious Park Mark Award for all of its 28 pay-and-display car parks. Tis means that the District Council, working closely with Cambridgeshire Police, are doing everything possible to deter crime and anti-social behaviour, creating a safe environment for residents and visitors.
Over the past year
there have been only 13 crimes recorded across all the car parks, compared to 27 recorded two years ago. Te total annual vehicle throughput is around three million. Cllr Colin Hyams
said: ‘Te council are very supportive of the Park Mark Scheme and have very good management practices in place, which is
reflected in these very low crime figures. Te car parks are clean, well lit, covered by CCTV and monitored constantly by staff.’ Street Rangers
regularly visit the car parks, and as part of their duties they are also responsible for reporting litter, graffiti and fly posting, as well as carrying out regular health and safety risk assessments.
