Growing membership: the BPA reaches 433 members in May; the majority from commercial organisations or local authorities

Transport for London (TfL) is created, gaining most of its functions from its predecessor London Regional Transport


2000


Transport Act passed, allowing the introduction of the Workplace Parking Levy. Nottingham is considering becoming the fi rst city to introduce a levy to fund expansion of its tram network


Then London Mayor Ken Livingstone


2003


introduces a congestion charge in central London


Residents of Edinburgh voice a resounding ‘no’ to a congestion


2005


charge in the Scottish capital, although adherents say it could have funded public transport improvements. Councils in the West Midlands, including Birmingham and Coventry, later reject the idea of road pricing schemes


BPA Model Contract gives local authorities a standardised way of managing parking contracts


1994


BPA President Alasdair Macmillan calls a meeting in Bristol to discuss an NVQ for parking


2007


October: BPA launches the Approved Operator Scheme to set, and improve, standards in off -street parking
