EMC EMC made easy

Schurter has extended its ECO filtered power entry module for DC applications, series 5003, with a new PCB mount version and a version with flexible wires to provide easy installation. Applications are in data critical environments such as IT, telecomand data encryption but also in DC supplied industry automation.

The 5003 features a standard DC connector, offered in

two different connector styles. The connector is encased with a one-stage filter for currents up to 15A at 125V DC. The unitmounts to the equipment enclosurewith ametal flange, providing a large contact area for optimal shielding and filter efficiency. The PCBmounting style version is availablewith optional snap feet to fasten the 5003 onto the printed circuit board. The flexiblewire leads are said to facilitate fast and cost saving installation. Screw-on, snap-in and rivetmounting options are offered. The rearmount type with pre-threaded holes, aswell as the snap-in, are designed specifically to reduce assembly time and save labour costs.

loading can cause the silicone to lose its elastomeric properties. The electrical properties of the conductive elastomer aremeasured

in volume resistivity (ohms-cm) and shielding effectiveness stated in db however the two do not directly correlate with each other.

For example, nickel coated graphite in silicone gives excellent

shielding characteristics, even though thematerial ismuchmore resistive than preciousmetal plated particle elastomers. Thismakes it a particularly cost effective conductive elastomer.

Its excellent performance can be accredited to the nickel graphite

Kemtronmanufactures a range of conductive elastomers, which can be used to create gaskets and gasket strip for EMI shielding in a variety of electronic devices. The base elastomer is silicone for normal environments and fluorosilicone for fuel and oil resistance, both with a temperature range of -40 to 160 and up to 200°C for some grades. A number of conductive fillers are available depending on the application: silver plated aluminium, silver plated copper, pure nickel and nickel coated graphite. Other fillers such as silver plated nickel are available to special order.

Manufacturing a conductive elastomer is a balancing act between

conductive particle loading and distribution throughout the silicone base. Even distribution ensures the particles are in contact with each other for a good conductive path through the elastomer, however over

TDK-EPC has introduced a new sample kit of Epcos current- compensated ring core power chokes. These EMC parts are designed for 250VAC and offer current capabilities between 0.4 and 6.0A. Inductances ranges from0.2 and 39mH.

particles, which are irregular in shape and have sharp edges. When the gasket is compressed, the particles dig into the surface giving low contact resistance. Graphite is also a goodmicrowave absorber thereby enhancing shielding performance. Nickel graphite in silicone costs approximately 60 per cent less than silver plated aluminiumin silicone and 70 per cent less than silver plated copper in silicone. Nickel graphite also offers excellent galvanic corrosion resistance over silver plated particles when in contact with aluminiumflanges.

common-mode interference in compact switch-mode power supplies and converters.

Thanks to stray inductances of about one per cent of the rated

inductance, symmetrical interference can also be suppressed. Depending on the type, DC resistance values range from30 to 2000mohm. The chokes correspond to EN 60938-2 (VDE 0565-2) and the series is approved to UL 1283 (up to 300 V) and/or ENEC/ VDE.

For those whomay need to add EMC protection retrospectively, Rittal offers the Ripac Vario subrack which can be upgraded from standard to EMC after it has been completed. Suitable for mounting multiple board electronic solutions in 482.6mmracks, the enhancedmodel will provide over 40dB of shielding effectiveness at 1GHz, both for incoming and outgoing protection.

A simple upgrade adds top and bottomcovers, a rear panel and a few

gaskets to ensure good electrical andmechanical contact between adjacent surfaces. All components are readily available fromstock.
