PHOTOCONTESTWINNERS2010 F EZ

Focalpoints

Youshotanalleyway in Bruges, ahippo inBotswana, newlyweds inVenice. You captured the ominous silhouette of a shark from below and a swirling storm cloud over the Dominican Republic from above. You snapped the morning fog in the Blue RidgeMountains, floating volcanic ash in Iceland and a weather-beaten couple in Romania. For our annual Reader Photo Contest, more than 1,600 of you (including a good number fromHungary, for some reason) sent in images that show not only where you’ve been, but how you see the world. We whittled down the pile and then enlistedNational Geographic Traveler photo editor Carol Enquist, who has judged quite a fewreader photo contests at her magazine, to help us pick our 10 favorites: four prize-winners and six honorable mentions. Each has something special, whether it’s the concept, the composition, a sense of humor or a spectacular use of light. Coincidentally, twoof the top four were taken by photographers from Budapest named Zoltan. We chalk that up to the wonderful serendipity of travel.

Second Place Christina Convis, Silver Spring

Coming home from a road trip with their three young children, Convis and her husband suddenly realized that there was no noise coming from the back seat. After a full day of sightseeing, all three kids had fallen soundly asleep. Taken (as were the judges) with the composition of the scene—the two conked-out boys framing the mirror that reflects their sleeping baby sister—Convis got out her Canon digital SLR and shot the photo. “I wanted to capture this everyday moment,” wrote the stay-at-home mom. “Many a parent can appreciate the blissful joy of a quiet car during a road trip!”

l Best of the rest: Fourth place and

honorable mentions. F4-F5

Winner Zoltan Balogh, Budapest

On holiday along the Portuguese coast with his mother, Balogh was on the hunt for a good sunset photo when he came upon a beach behind some high-rise buildings in the town of Vila do Conde. As a surfer crossed the path of the sun dropping into the Atlantic Ocean, the 30- year-old freelance photographer snapped the shot with his KonicaMinolta 7D, catching a glint of rays between the figure’s knees and the reflection of the sun-tinged clouds in a pool on the sand. “It was the unique moment I was waiting for,” Balogh wrote to us. “It was really perfect, with the surfer, the reflections of the sun and the dramatic clouds and colors. When I took this picture, I knewit was one of the most beautiful moments of my photography career.”We had to agree.

Third Place Zoltan Vass, Budapest

Our third-place winner was in Pokhara, Nepal, strolling around Phewa Lake with his friends, when he spotted a long row of colorful boats on the water. The Hungarian architect was struck by the way the boats, with their painted “Welcome” inscriptions, created a sense of brightness and happiness in the relatively poor country. He took his picture with a Sony Alpha 200 camera fitted with a telephoto lens. “I like this photo because I think not everybody can understand at first what is in it,” Vass told us, describing exactly the reaction we had upon first glimpse of the abstract-looking shot. “You need some seconds before you realize that it’s boats.”
