COFFEE/ Chai: There are Star- bucks/Paneras everywhere, and I like Tryst, but can you recommend other places where I can take my laptop or a book, chill with a little coffee/ chai/snack and be social without being social? I’m looking for spots in D.C. or MD. LAvAnyA RAMAnAThAn: I have a friend who swears by Chloe’s Coffee in Gaithersburg, which is not where I’d nor- mally think of for non-chain hang- outs. But there it is, looking totally cool and host- ing open-mike nights. In D.C., one of the best places to eat a bagel, nurse a coffee and read the paper is probably Mid City Caffe.

A peculiar prince

When it comes to freaky-deaky folk deities, Will Oldham is as eccentric as they come. The Kentucky-born songwriter has appeared in an R. Kelly video and recently lent his voice to a cartoon about a family of Appalachian squids. But it’s tough to catch those vibes when Oldham sings as Bonnie “Prince” Billy. His songs are paralyzing, handsome affairs where the tiny peculiarities trickle beneath the surface like some strange subterranean brook. // 8 p.m. Sunday. Rams Head Tavern, 33 West St., Annapolis. 410-268-4545. http:// tickets.ramsheadonstage.com. $30.
