At ‘Roadshow,’ hopes run high for thousands

prayer book that an ancestor brought from Ireland in the late 18th century.
A couple brought a cane made from the timber of Abraham Lin- coln’s Springfield, Ill., home. A half dozen people brought copies of the Declaration of Inde- pendence. They all wanted to hear ap-
praisers utter the same words: that they’d stumbled upon an im- mensely valuable artifact, some lost treasure of Americana. Those stories have become “An- tiques Roadshow” lore. Like the time Ken Gloss appraised a first edition William Shakespeare fo- lio in Des Moines. Or the time Simeon Lipman was asked to as- cribe a value to a Willie Mays mi- nor league uniform in near-per- fect condition. “You’re looking at this incred- ible piece of history,” Lipman said, “just trying to imagine how it landed here.” Mostly, though, the appraisers are charged with telling visitors that their family heirlooms are worth little. There are fakes, fourth editions once thought to be first editions and bearskin rugs that may or may not have be- longed to the daughter of a fa- mous actress. It’s a fundamental truth of an- tiques collecting: Sentimentality rarely translates to dollar signs. Betsy Mitchell and her hus- band, Steven, came to the con- vention center with a small wooden gun inscribed with the year 1865. “Three generations of girls
have brought this gun into show- and-tell. We always thought it was a pirate pistol,” said Betsy Mitchell. “Turns out, according to the appraiser, it never belonged to pirates.” The gun, like most of the items, is primarily a monument to its

The lines grew throughout the morning, forcing some attendees to wait hours for face time with an appraiser. As the room grew more crowded, it seemed as if the collective content of Washington area attics had been transplanted to the convention center. And because this is the nation’s capital, much of that content was political paraphernalia. Susan Crabtree brought a signed Franklin Roosevelt litho- graph made out to her great- grandfather, who was the post- master general of North Dakota. It was valued at a somewhat dis- appointing $75.
