Edgy female drama

An early masterpiece

Architect Paul Philippe Cret built several important buildings in the nation’s capital and some of this city’s best bridges. But one of his earliest projects, the Constitution Avenue home he helped design for what is now known as the Organization of American States, is one of his best. The small museum on the grounds of the ornate palace has devoted its space to an exhibition celebrating Cret’s early masterpiece. It is worth a look for its elegant drawings, its glimpse into what other architects were thinking at the time, and its insight into the ambitions of the OAS as a regional conclave. But hurry. The exhibition closes in a week. // Through Aug. 29. Art Museum of the Americas, 201 18th St. NW. 202-458-6016. www.museum.oas.org. Free.
