SGB Sports New repellent

Smidge launched Smidge, a new insect repellent specifically developed and scientifically proven to provide protection against Scotland’s midges for up to eight hours, has hit outdoor retailers.

The new repellent has been developed by Advanced Pest Solutions Ltd (APS), at its laboratories in the University of Edinburgh’s ETTC Biospace facility. The development was led by Dr Alison Blackwell, a world-renowned authority on midge behaviour and leader of the scientific team behind the Scottish Midge Forecast, which has been providing forecasts for print and television media for the past few years.

“Smidge’s unique formula works by throwing midges off our scent,” explains Dr Blackwell. “Midges start their hunt for us using smell, detecting CO2 and a whole cocktail of other body odours. It’s the release of CO2 in our exhaled breath that guides a midge to its prey. Smidge interferes with this process and confuses the insect – when a midge can’t smell us, it can’t find us and therefore won’t bite us. “Our online midge forecast at www.midgeforecast.co.uk is entering its fifth year and has been used by visitors from all over the world. This year we are launching the forecast as an iPhone app to coincide with the introduction of Smidge which will give people the opportunity to keep up-to-date with the forecast wherever they are.” Smidge is DEET-free, yet proven to be just as effective as DEET-based repellents, making it a powerful, yet family-friendly alternative. It’s safe for use on adults and children over 30 months, as well as pregnant women and is recommended for use by the World Health Organisation.

In addition to repelling biting midges, Smidge also protects against other biting insects such as mosquitoes, horse flies, fleas, sand flies and ticks, making it ideal for use both in Scotland and overseas. Specially formulated with the outdoor enthusiast in mind, the new repellent provides long-lasting eight hour protection and is water and sweat resistant.

The product comes in a 75ml lightweight aluminium bottle that can easily be stowed in a pocket or a day pack without adding unnecessary weight. Both the can and its top are suitable for recycling. Smidge will be available online from www.midgeforecast.co.uk and from stockists across Scotland after 9 June 2010.

JULY 2010 SGB OUTDOOR 7 Teva commits to Gulf

clean-up Teva has pledged its commitment to raise awareness and assist in the Gulf Of Mexico clean-up through a commitment of $100,000 through long-term partner, Waterkeeper Alliance. "Waterkeeper Alliance is extremely grateful for the generous support of

Teva in the face of this tragedy. Overcoming the damage from this ongoing disaster will demand a lot from us all, and it is heartening to see a brand like Teva stepping up to the plate," says Kristine Stratton, Executive Director of Waterkeeper Alliance. On Earth Day, 2010, the Gulf of Mexico was rocked with one of the worst

environmental disasters in US history. Already, fishing between the Mississippi River and Florida Panhandle has been shut down, putting incredible strain on the men and women who rely on the Gulf for their livelihood. Countless jobs will be and have been lost in the Gulf’s fishing and tourism industries, further pummeling an already struggling regional economy. The waters of the Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Mexico coastlines will be affected for years to come. Through Teva’s continued commitment to being stewards of clean water

along with their partnership with Waterkeeper Alliance, the emergency donation from Teva will assist in the effort to protect and clean up this delicate area. Together they will save marine life, wildlife, beaches and waterways that are relied on for fishing and recreation, and -- most importantly – water.
