2010 Conservation Projects

Announcement Following a tense battle between the projects on the

shortlist, it came down to the final member vote to actually decide which projects were going to be supported by the EOG Association for Conservation in 2010!

T

he shortlist of 12 was narrowed down from 46 nominated projects, and distributed to all Association members to choose the most worthwhile projects. Added to this was one final

project, chosen by nearly 19,000 British outdoor consumers in conjunction with Trail magazine.

The projects being supported by the Association this year are:

World Pheasant Association - School Extensions in return for Forest Protection (Nepal) - Pipar is a forest in the Annapurna Conservation area, and home to 5 out of 6 of Nepal’s Himalayan pheasant species. Since 1983, the WPA has worked closely with local villagers, resourcing teaching facilities, staff and equipment in return for the villagers’ using the forest traditionally, for their own needs, and not commercial gain. The pheasant

population has remained stable, educational needs for the locals are supported and the conservation of an important area is also promoted. This project will build extensions to 2 local schools and monitor biodiversity in Pipar and adjacent forests. Nominated by Berghaus.

World Land Trust - Elephant Corridors (India) - 88 corridors throughout

India are critical to the survival of the Asian Elephant. These are unprotected lands between fragments of protected areas, and increasingly human dominated, resulting in high levels of conflict. Securing corridors involves sensitising communities to the option of voluntarily relocating to safer areas, and leaving areas to regenerate naturally, providing continued refuge for a huge variety of wildlife. This project will prioritise 7 corridors and introduce the elephant corridor concept to local communities and key conservationists. This grant award has been doubled to €60,000 through the donation of matched funding. Nominated by Nikwax.
