Trekmates Sense XtraFit glove

Tech Rep once again goes beneath the surface to bring you the salesman’s pitch for Trekmates’ Sense XtraFit glove… Paul Horton, Trekmates’ Product Manager, explains its benefits and who you should be selling it to.

Q:What’s special about this glove, then? A: Sense XtraFit is a new type of GORE-TEX glove. Recently Gore introduced a new system which was originally designed for motorbiking, in short bikers needed a waterproof glove that offered exceptional grip and feel; it became clear that these attributes and the technology to achieve them would be ideal for the outdoor market also. The concept is that these gloves are more tactile and sensitive than other GORE-TEX gloves, especially through the palm of the hand, whilst remaining waterproof. When it was introduced to bikers they wanted to have a good tactile sense through the hands, it didn’t at that stage require good movement for the fingers though, as holding a handlebar and working the clutch or brake uses all the fingers as one. For outdoor use the flexibility in the fingers has been improved to ensure a positive grip.

Q: So what are the differences? A: On a regular glove you have an outer shell, then insulation, then a GORE-TEX insert, for

USPs

• Ideal for holding or gripping, or even just opening a rucksack without having to take your gloves off

• Much more usable in everyday walking and climbing

• Sense XtraFit isn’t a full-on insulated glove so slightly lighter than many, with a cuff for good slim fitting

• Sizing is S,M,L,XL • RRP £44.99

waterproofing and breathability, then a lining. The problem with this is that the layers can slip and rub against each other so you can't always get a really good secure grip. On the Sense XtraFit glove what WL GORE has introduced is a breathable tape that goes on the palm and on the inside of the fingers. The tape is tacky, which stops the movement between the palm lining and the GORE-TEX insert. Also because it's not sticky it's not permanently bonded so when you open your hand the glove does not feel overly stiff as the tape lifts away again. So holding a pole or ice-axe, you get very good feel and grip. In addition the GORE-TEX insert is now bonded to reduce any movement. As this new technology is applied to the palm and fingers only we are able to add insulation to other areas of the glove.

Q:Who is the end user for this? A: It really has a broad appeal, anyone who needs to be able to grip equipment like trekking poles, ice axes or even just for being able to easily open and close zips while wearing waterproof gloves. It’s not fully insulated, so it’s

not for extreme cold – but watch this space in the future.

Q:What’s the RRP? A: £44.99. We think that’s a great value price for a new technology from GORE- TEX combined with the Trekmates standard for quality.
