The great news is that with pole technology reaching new heights, you don’t have to spend hundreds or thousands of pounds on a pole that’s suitable for tackling these distances. If I’m expecting to catch some big carp, maybe into double fi gures, my Hot Spot V2 is perfect as it will easily handle strong lines combined with heavy hollow elastics up to a whopping size 22. If I have to fi sh further out, the longer Battle Zone V2 comes into play as it’s longer, lighter and stiff er but will still easily handle those thick lines and heavy elastics.

You can’t go wrong fi shing with pellets and over the last few years this bait has really revolutionised the way we fi sh and the tackle we use. Take these excellent ready-made pole rigs for example. They’re designed

RECOMMEND KIT I

The Hot Spot and Battle Zone poles are great value work-horse poles. They are super strong yet not too heavy for a little fi nesse.

Use hollow Shock Core elastic it is

strong enough for bigger fi sh yet has a soft

stretch that does not bump off small-medium carp.

Middy off er some very good ready made pole rigs, they incorporate top quality components and they are tied well. These two models incorporate ready to go hair attachments for either soft or hard pellet set-ups.

A pretty good day, especially when you think I have been fi shing the area of the lake many anglers ignore!

SOFT PELLETS

specifi cally for pellet fi shing and even come with hair rigs with either a band attached to the hair (use when fi shing hard pellets) or with a spike on the hair which are brilliant for pushing into soft hooker pellets like expanders. Once the spike has been pushed into the bait it won’t slip out and it’s also unobtrusive so you get perfect bait presentation. The fl oats too are perfect and with reinforced side eyes and fl exible stems, they’re designed to withstand plenty of punishment. Combine that with Middy Lo-Viz line and you’ve not only got a perfect pellet rig, you’ve also got a rig that’s made from the best components and won’t let you down. All you need to do is plumb the depth!

With my rig set at an inch overdepth, which accounts for any unevenness

in the bottom, I’m looking to catch fi sh on the bottom. To make sure the fi sh don’t come shallow, I’m feeding the swim with generous amounts of pellets every 15 minutes or so to keep them down. A pole cup is the best way of doing this and today I’m using a large Middy Click Cup which is perfect for feeding the swim in this way. As the name suggest, this pot clicks rather than screws onto the adaptor that’s fi xed to the end of your cupping kit - so no more cross threads! It works a treat too and by feeding a big pot of pellets every quarter of an hour I’ve managed to catch steadily all day from an area of the swim many anglers ignore!

HARD PELLETS

pot of pellets every quarter of an hour.
