MATCH CARP CATCH TACTICS With Anthony King
The feeder king at Makin’s shows why sometimes a simple feeder set-up utilised in the correct way will produce the best results.
I know that there is a shallow shelf just before the island opposite to me and if I can get my feeder within twelve inches of that island, I feel sure there are fi sh to be had. I am therefore setting up with a 15g Carp Cage feeder on a running rig set-up with a 12” (30cm) hook length. The plan is to feed micro pellets via the feeder while presenting a hair rigged 6mm punched piece of meat as the hook bait.
For this approach you will need a light short feeder rod and possibly the best rod for this job is the X-Flex light feeder from Middy. It has power in the mid- section but plenty of fl ex in the top section to quickly subdue carp. You will also fi nd it easier to cast accurately to islands that are only 15m away with a short rod, this model is only 10’ (3m). You do not want to be punting the feeder out; the key is to gently drop the feeder into the water creating as little disturbance as possible. Accuracy and fi nesse is vital to success, so line up your cast to a feature on the island and make sure you get it within a foot of the island every single time. Remember to bury your rod when bringing fi sh in so that they are brought away from the swim with minimal disturbance.
10 Match Carp Catch Tactics
I find that some anglers can over complicate things and I will often revert to a light cage feeder set-up to get results. Without a doubt some of the more sophisticated feeders like the ShotGun work but they are not as light and simple as a mini cage feeder and when fish are hard to come by, then there are times when a light simple rig can prevail.
