BOTH WORLDS

You don't need to fish mega- long poles on commercials and many anglers fall into the trap of fishing 14.5m just because the pole in their holdall is 14.5m long. As Steve Haywood demonstrates, long isn't always best and fishing closer in is often overlooked. And very productive!

The majority of commercial fi sheries are man-made and as a result they are what you can classify as’ angler friendly’. Uniform depths that are not too deep or too shallow provide comfortable fi shing and quite often, particularly when pleasure fi shing, the fi sh will come to where you feed. There are certain times of year when they prefer certain areas of the lake, like in winter when the deeper areas of the swim are more productive, or during the height of summer when they prefer the shallow water around the margins.

However, there is one part of the swim where you can catch fi sh pretty much all year round on the pole and that’s the area that falls half way between a long pole line and margin swim. Fishing between six and 12 metres is a highly productive tactic and on the majority of commercial fi sheries this puts you very close to or at the bottom of the near shelf - an area fi sh of all species are naturally attracted to.
