MATCH CARP CATCH TACTICS FINESSE with STRENGTH with Alec Roberts
THERE WILL BE OCCASIONS WHEN SETTING UP FOR SILVER FISH WILL WIN THE DAY.
The problem can be that most of the time when we whip fi sh we’re committed to catching silvers and cannot quickly adapt should we see bigger opportunities.
But the new 3G Whip from Middy gives you the option of fi shing away as normal, but also being able to cash in on those moments.
How? Well because it’s a eight metre silver fi sh whip package and a strong margin power pole in one. This is achievable because the whip is a tele-take apart. You get a standard solid carbon fl ick tip in the end of a tele three which you set up normally for silver fi sh work. But this can be taken off the pole at the fourth and replaced by a hollow long power top two kit, which you can elasticate with anything up to a No20 elastic.
Of course that would be no use if your whip simply exploded under the pressure of a big, margin hooked carp. But because of Middy’s X-fl ex technology what you get is a whip
Just a few of the fi sh from Alec’s session on the 3G….
A whip that’s rated to a No20 elastic – Middy does it again!
Then I spot a vortex in the water in the margins to my right where I’ve been fl icking sweetcorn. I’m ready to go with a 0.16mm rig straight through to a size 14 6313 hook and a No10 elastic through the power top two, and within seconds I’ve taken off the fl ick tip kit and am fi shing

capable of fl exing and subduing a power packed carp, with less risk of it ever breaking.
Today’s test has gone to plan. A maggot approach at fi ve metres has produced a lovely net of silver fi sh including some nice hybrids, skimmers and crucians, I’ve been using the new Baggin machine fl oats, which are great, because the line runs through the body and so there is less danger of a fl oat eye pulling out under pressure.

down the edge. It’s not a carp, but a nice hybrid around 3lb, which puts a lovely bend in the whip before it’s safely subdued. Not the carp I was looking for, but a good illustration of the versatility of the 3G, which is a whip and a margin pole all in one. If I do hit a bigger fi sh without changing over the top sections I at least know that this whip is built to be strong and give me a fi ghting chance, brilliant!
I really rate these 63-13 hook; they are a fi ne gauge but still strong if you hit bonus fi sh. I am using size 18 for silvers and 14 for my stronger top set-up today.

With the line going through the body of the Baggin Machine fl oats, there’s no chance of the eye pulling out under pressure.
