The carp in this lake can go into double fi gures and to pull that size of fi sh away from the bush requires some pretty robust gear. This is also true of the fl oat which is put under a tremendous amount of pressure when you use strong lines and elastics. It also has to remain intact should a hooked fi sh fi nd its way into that bush and I fi nd the Bagging Machine fl oats take some beating (in fact, they take a lot of beating). They’re designed specifi cally to cope with this punishing style of fi shing and a great feature is the length of silicon tubing that runs through the body. Thread your line through this and the side eye is protected from being ripped out of the body under pressure.
The fi rst job though is to get some fi sh into the swim and because of the
shallow nature of margin swims, it’s easy to get the feeding wrong. Feed too little and you won’t attract many fi sh, but feed too much and you can easily attract too many fi sh that will result in a lot of liners and foul-hooked fi sh - which you defi nitely won’t be able to get out. You’ll be surprised at how close the fi sh will come too and it’s always worth dripping in few cubes of meat literally under your feet for later in the session. On a good peg you can catch there all day and there’s now even a purpose made tool for this. The Shock Stikk is an extremely thin, short and unbelievably strong pole (it’s a super-beefed up 3m whip) that comes ready elasticated with 22-24 Hi-Viz elastic. Get the fi sh going on this and you can really put a big weight together.
You will need a fi shery approved, large, robust keepnet, this Big Un model from Middy is perfect.
Use quality Middy meat punches for your hookbait, I used a 6mm punched hookbait but 4mm cubed meat for feeding.
