Soldier Technology 2010

Will Fowler Editor G3 DEFENCE reports on this year’s conference

Soldier Technology 2010 the Soldier Modernisation Conference and Exhibition held at the Olympia Conference Centre, London attracted a wide range of respected international sponsors as well as soldiers from Europe and North America. Among these companies were EADS, Elbit Systems, Northrop Grumman and Thales. Associated sponsors were BAE Systems, SELEX. Sagem, QinetiQ and Aimpoint. With support like this the conference and exhibition was guaranteed to attract respected speakers and wide professional interest. Speakers were drawn both from industry and the armed forces and included representatives of the US, Italian, Canadian, British, Brazilian, French and Romanian armies. The Chairman on the first day was Colonel (ret’d) Richard Hansen, former Project Manager, Soldier Warrior, PEO Soldier, US Army. On the second the

conference was opened by Lt Colonel Mike Bodner, Chairman Group 1, Dismounted Soldier. The conference was structured with

three afternoon streams. On day one Stream A covered Protection and Survivability, B Human Performance and Training and C Lethality. On the second day Stream A covered Soldier Communications, B Soldier Sensors, Lasers and Sights and C Practical Human Systems. There were also two focus days at the beginning and end of the conference – the first covered vehicle interoperability and the second soldier C4I and power and energy systems. Speaker from the armed forces included soldiers with recent experience of challenging operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For the 500 men and women who attended the conference the wealth of a speakers and quality of the companies exhibiting made the experience of Soldier Technology 2010

a little like that of the child in the sweet shop – the question was “Where do I start and will I miss something?” The key note speaker at the 9th Soldier Technology Annual Award dinner was General Sir Richard Dannatt former Chief of the General Staff and a highly respected and forthright champion of soldiers. The conference attracted 54 exhibitors, and while this may seem modest compared to some major international shows, Soldier Technology 2010 was highly focussed and for many this gave a feeling of quality rather than quantity. In February 2011 Soldier Technology will be at Crystal City, VA, USA with exhibitors and conference audience drawn from the US Marine Corps, US Army, Canadian Armed Forces and Central American armed forces.
