Scaras the Electronic Support Measures (ESM) surveillance system that has been in service with the British Army for seven years has grown up – in fact in reality it has grown smaller. Scaras was designed to be operated by a six man team from a static hide in an operational theatre like North West Europe. The specialist team would gather electronic intelligence from a wide spectrum.


Now the character of warfare has changed. Ongoing operations in Afghanistan have seen small foot patrols clearing and securing areas where there is a 360º threat. Faced by this the soldiers need accurate intelligence on demand so if required they can react quickly and move fast.
