flexibility. The result is CAMELEON MMS® (Modular Mission System®). CAMELEON incorporates a radical yet simple answer to the perennial need for economically viable, flexible, rapid force packaging options for commanders.

At the heart of CAMELEON is a demountable load system or load changer system, often referred to as DROPS (dismountable rack offload and pickup system). After much research and prototyping the OVIK design team, led by Jez Hermer and Chief Design Engineer Dick Woods, decided that a radical re-use and re- sizing of the classic DROPS system could be the basis for a truly flexible mission load changer system. Instead of the load changer system picking up and dropping off logistic palletised loads, Hermer’s idea was to design a range of mission ‘modules’ – each with a specific task or role, which could rapidly

be picked up by a base vehicle thus transforming it into a mission specific platform. The benefits are obvious, and, depending upon your perspective, potentially enormous. From offering commanders and logisticians high degrees of flexibility in mission packaging options to the obvious economic efficiency of utilising one base platform across a number of mission roles it could be argued that CAMELEON goes further than most to achieving true mission flexibility. The OVIK team conducted detailed

research to find the right base vehicle – they found it in the new IVECO 4x4 Daily. ‘After looking long and hard at a wide range of potentially suitable base platforms, we were blown away by the 4x4 Daily. The vehicle impressed the OVIK team (all with former military vehicle trials and developments backgrounds) with its sheer cross country ability, power, payload and ruggedness. ‘As soon as we’d finished our initial trials we knew we’d found the right vehicle to launch CAMELEON MMS. The vehicle far out-performed other specialist military platforms in the same payload class – and because it’s a pure COTS system it’s extremely cost effective and backed up by IVECO’s huge global ILS network. Given our target markets we wanted CAMELEON to be based upon a platform with a good commercial

pedigree and an unsurpassed commercial support infrastructure’, said Hermer. OVIK Managing Director Duncan Hermer went further to say: ‘We were also adamant that the vehicle had not only to perform to a very high level and conform to a true COTS model but it also had to look credible in a military context. In the IVECO 4x4 we’ve certainly found everything we’re looking for.’ Whilst CAMELEON MMS refers to the mission module system – the fusion of CAMELEON with the IVECO 4x4 created the name CAMELEON IV440. A benefit of CAMELEON is that it can be up-scaled or down sized and placed upon any base platform - according to the customer’s requirements, the OVIK team knew
