A change of threat is not just a change of tactics but a change in industry too


A number of technical advances have recently taken place that change the threat but also improve protection, reduce munition effect and lethality or change doctrine and therefore assist with improving the utility of troops deployed on operations. Ranging from the simple to the very complex they all have to be used to their maximum capability to deliver greater operational effect from any group of soldiers deployed in the combat element of

modern conflict. This combat element is increasingly, but not exclusively, an increase in precision attack. This is not to say that combat is the only element of modern conflict that troops are involved in. The age old mantra of “winning hearts and minds” is just as important as ever it was, and it too is increasingly part of modern combat. The wresting of the minds of the uncommitted from the grip of the enemy is a more effective way of


winning the battle of numbers. The body count should not be the number of terrorists killed but the number of doubters, or other minds, won over. As the Western World continues


to learn the difficulties of modern conflict, and adopt and adapt to the new thought processes, new capabilities are increasing the troops’ operational effectiveness once deployed to an operational area. Improved ISTAR makes the ability to
