Sheffield, have designed and built specialist surveillance and recording systems for Government, Defence and Security Services agencies worldwide. Now Synectics have come up with a valuable tool to assist vehicle and dismounted infantry patrols. Partnered with Bristol based Persides they have produced the next generation of man portable ESM equipment - Chili - the world’s smallest, full-featured ESM system.

Crucial intelligence for the modern battlefield Chili offers high technical

performance but is very soldier friendly. This means, for the first time, non-EW operators can have easy and instant access to an EW system, giving them indictors and warnings of possible hostile activity. The small patrol can now be easily alerted to likely threats and take quick evasive action, reducing crucial decision making time. The system is light weight, low volume

and portable, fitting into a day pack, allowing the patrol to carry it along with their other operational equipments and make use of this tactical EW on the move.

If the foot patrol has a dedicated EW operator, then the system can be used to give enhanced information allowing instant tactical ISTAR input that can be used to steer the conflict. With its large recording capability Chili is ideal for capturing the spectrum and allowing deep post mission analysis to help shape future Tactics, Training and Procedures. For the hard pressed radio operator Chili saves him the task of attempting to keep some kind of log of a fast moving action – it is simply switched on and operates independently.

It can be vehicle mounted either with or without a DF capability. The system can capture signals of interest for either immediate action or Post mission analysis. Crucially, it can be used as a C-IED warning system,

The lightweight Chili ESM can be carried in a day pack and consequently is not a piece of equipment with an obvious visual signature. Image © Synectics
