Infrarail innovations

• AutoDrain’s Oil-Away system is intended to revolutionise oil changing for rail maintenance depots, using an adapter attached to a vehicle’s sump tank to remove engine oil while still hot. This eliminates the risk of contact with carcinogenic waste fluids for the mechanics and avoids spills, leading to a cleaner, more efficient service workshop.

• BOC Ltd launched the Hymera 150W, contender for the world’s first affordable and practical hydrogen fuel cell-based power generator. With no exhaust emissions other than water and its almost silent operation, the Hymera will mark a new era in off-grid power, according to BOC, combining the long duration of petrol and diesel generators with the low environmental impact of batteries. For example, when the BOC Hymera is used with modern, high efficiency LED lighting it can produce as much light as six 250W tungsten halogen floodlights and can be kept running for almost 20 hours by one portable cylinder of hydrogen.

• New diagnostics technology for railway signalling systems was unveiled at Infrarail by Frauscher Sensor Technology. Known as FDS, the system is aimed at providing the signalling maintenance engineer with the information he requires at any time and anywhere. Functions offered include: component status; movements information; reset operations and user interaction; and statistical data, such as train movements and error history.

• Leica Geosystems showcased its

GeoMoS Geodetic Monitoring software, which provides a highly flexible automatic deformation monitoring system that is able to combine geodetic, geotechnical and meteorological sensors to match the needs of any monitoring project, whether it is large or small, temporary or permanent. The software can be tailored to report movement in any manner the user requires, from SMS text messages to claxon and can also be related to the amount of movement. This enables the user to monitor points at different frequencies depending on their relevance and importance, minimising cost while maintaining safety.

• MC Electronics’ lockable Limpet

‘NOT TO BE MOVED’ fixing system universally fits all types of rolling stock, allowing staff to take responsibility for and guarantee their own personal safety.

• Winning contender for Best Shell Scheme Stand in the Infrarail Awards

was Prysmian Cables & Systems.

Effective use of available by the company enabled it to showcase its power cable ranges and rolling stock and telecoms products. There was a particular focus on additions to Prysmian’s Flexo Rail line of pre- terminated electrical connection products. The firm’s cables have seen extensive use in the recent upgrade of the North London Line ahead of the 2012 Olympics.

• The latest visual inspection tool was

featured by Snap-on Rail Solutions.
