About 17 years ago, Bio-Productions created a safer alternative to the old fashioned carcinogenic pDCB urinal blocks known as ‘pineapple chunks’. These

water-soluble Toss Blocks have been adopted by consumers around the world because of their performance and environmental credentials.

There are a few companies still offering pDCB – a crystalline compound used as a deodorising pest repellent - because they don’t care about your health or the environment. pDCB blocks don’t provide any cleaning efficacy, they only mask smells and it is well proven that by incorporating the correct bacteria into a urinal block or a biological cleaner the traps and pipes will remain clean and odour-free.

“gimmicky” ideas

The important thing is to include the correct bacteria as it isn’t just a case of throwing more bacteria at the problem. Just like using tools, it isn’t possible to unscrew a screw with a hammer and it isn’t possible to degrade typical urine waste with protein-degrading bacteria.

There are many products that have been cobbled together because curing washroom problems looks like a good way to make money and there are many different gizmos for urinals on the market. How viable these prove is another point and more often only a hole remains where a proud rocket-ship once glistened.

These retro-fit plastic gizmos screw into the urinal, invariably containing some sort of block which is supposed to last three months or more. We at Bio-Productions formulated a block which would dissolve each time the urinal was used, lasting on average between five and seven days. This ensured the correct amount of chemical cleaning agent and bacteria were delivered into the outlet every time.

We also discovered that by reducing the frequency of the flush the bacteria would have a better opportunity to work and that we could save a considerable amount of water. This USP was quickly adopted by some companies who built businesses around zero flushing.

Time has shown this to be a foolish act. Abandoning the occasional purging of the outlet pipes leaves solids to build up throughout the system and we know of floors and walls which have been broken into to remove pipes full of solidified urine and calcium.

Your customers and clients will increasingly want more value for money and they will judge your approach to solving problems and green issues more sceptically.

Selling disposable gimmicks with little or no credibility is bound to damage your image - and your bottom-line, naturally.

Connecting Da Vinci and Leonardo

Connect Hygiene Products Ltd, who have recently taken over the Kruger UK tissue business, have been required to rename their best selling Da Vinci brand as part of the terms of the acquisition.

The brand, now to be known in the UK from 1st June 2010 as Leonardo, will continue the current premium positioning and retain its characteristic excellent cost in use performance.

Jonathan Hooper, Connect’s Marketing Manager commented: “Kruger stipulated that they wished to retain the Da Vinci name at the time of the sale, so we have had plenty of time to think about it.”

He continued: “We considered a number of options, but strategically felt that for our existing customers and from a continuity viewpoint Leonardo was a particularly comfortable alternative”.
